For the Kia EV6, the California complaint picture is simple: most owner reports to NHTSA involve the electrical system. If your new or leased EV6 keeps returning to a Kia dealer for an electrical fault, a charging problem or a loss of power that never seems to get fixed, California lemon law may give you the right to a repurchase or replacement. Here is how to read the data and protect your claim.

Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for an EV6 case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.

Kia EV6: Complaints from California Drivers

Since January 2021, California drivers filed 81 safety complaints with NHTSA about 2019 or newer Kia EV6 vehicles.

Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.

The EV6 Complaint Numbers From California

California owners of 2022 and newer Kia EV6 vehicles filed 81 complaints with NHTSA from 2021 through 2026, each counted once. That is a modest number, so treat it as a small sample. The EV6 complaints are owner reports, not verified defects, and they are not adjusted for sales.

The electrical system appeared in 51 of those 81 complaints, by far the largest category. Everything else was small: the fuel and EV propulsion system (5), the transmission and powertrain (5), driver-assist and collision warning systems (3), brakes (2) and the engine category (2). A complaint can mention more than one component, so the counts overlap.

The first model year, 2022, had the most complaints (38). The 2023 EV6 had 21, 2024 had 12 and 2025 had 10. Los Angeles (5), San Jose (4), Oakland (3), San Diego (3), Monterey Park (2) and Long Beach (2) were the top cities. With numbers this low, the city list tells you very little beyond where some owners live.

What the EV6 numbers do show is a clear pattern in the type of complaint. If your own car has an electrical problem that keeps coming back, you are describing the same kind of issue many other California owners reported. That alone does not prove a defect in your car, but it is a reason to keep careful records from the first visit.

Safety Defect or Not: Sorting EV6 Problems

Within 18 months or 18,000 miles, Civil Code 1793.22(b) presumes that the manufacturer had a reasonable number of chances if a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired two or more times, the same defect four or more times, or the car spent more than 30 days in the shop. Check your owner's manual for any requirement to notify Kia directly.

For an electric vehicle, an electrical fault can be a safety problem when it causes the car to lose drive power, shut down while moving or lose lighting. Those facts may support the two-repair rule. Describe exactly where you were and what the car did, because the repair order needs to show more than a warning light.

An EV6 that will not charge overnight or shows a warning while parked is a real problem but may be treated as a non-safety defect. Those cases usually rest on four repairs or more than 30 days out of service. If the defect first showed up under warranty, a claim can still succeed after 18 months or 18,000 miles.

Talking to the Kia Service Advisor

Bring a short written note to every visit: the date, the charge level, the outside temperature, whether you were charging or driving, and the exact message on the screen. Show photos taken before you restarted the car. Ask the advisor to put your words on the repair order, then read it before you drive away.

If the technician performs a software update to fix your complaint, it can count as a repair attempt, so make sure the update is on the order. A visit where the dealer could not find the problem can also count, so keep that copy. Work by an independent shop, or anything you fix yourself, does not count toward Kia's attempts.

Count your days without the car. EV6 warranty repairs must be completed within 30 days unless you agree otherwise under Civil Code 1793.2(b). If the EV6 waits for parts, those days still count toward the 30-day part of the presumption.

  • Your written description, attached or copied onto the order
  • Dates in and out and the odometer reading
  • Software updates, part replacements and recall work
  • A note if no fault was found
  • Tow and roadside assistance records

Who You Deal With: Kia America, Inc.

Kia dealers handle repairs, but the warranty comes from Kia America, Inc., the brand's U.S. company. If Kia cannot fix a warranty defect that substantially impairs your EV6's use, value or safety after a reasonable number of tries, Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2) requires a repurchase or replacement, and the refund option is yours to choose.

Opening a case with Kia's customer care line and saving the number helps show the manufacturer knew. Recall repairs on an EV6 can count as repair attempts for the same problem. Our site has EV6 recall pages for 22V322, 24V200, 24V867 and 26V431, and you can confirm which apply to your car by running your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

Many electric vehicles carry a separate battery and drive warranty along with the basic warranty. A defect covered by either one can support a claim if it was not fixed, so keep both warranty booklets with your records.

Charging records can help too. If your EV6 fails to charge at home or at public stations, save the app history, the charger's error screens and any messages from the charging network. Those records show when the problem happened and help separate a car defect from a charger problem, which is one of the first questions Kia is likely to raise.

A Made-Up EV6 Example

This example is fictional. It shows the process, not a real client or outcome. Kevin bought a new EV6. Twice in two months the car showed a warning and would not shift out of park in the morning. Each time the dealer kept the car for several days and returned it with a note that no fault was stored.

On the third occurrence, the car lost power while Kevin was pulling out of a parking garage. He took photos of the messages and the screen before turning it off, and had it towed. This time the dealer performed a software update and replaced a part, and the car sat for eleven days waiting on parts. Kevin saved all three repair orders, the tow records and his notes, then asked a lemon law attorney for a free review. The attorney added up the days out of service, considered whether the power loss was a safety issue, and handled the next steps with Kia.

Nothing in this EV6 example promises a result. It shows how photos taken before a restart, tow records and an accurate count of days turned several unclear visits into a record an attorney could evaluate.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring an EV6 Attorney

Ask whether the attorney has handled Kia electric vehicle claims and how they deal with repeated 'no fault found' visits. Ask who will manage your file day to day, and whether they will review every repair order before anything is sent to Kia.

Pay attention to whether the lawyer asks how you use the car, how far you drive, and where you charge. Those facts help show how an electrical defect affects the use, value or safety of the EV6, and they shape how the claim is presented.

Cost matters. When a buyer wins, the manufacturer pays the attorney fees, costs and expenses under Civil Code 1794(d). On an EV6 case with our firm, you pay $0 out of pocket, and if we lose, you owe nothing.

  • Do my 'no fault found' visits count?
  • Does my loss of power qualify as a safety defect?
  • How do you count days my EV6 waited for parts?
  • What should I do if Kia offers a cash payment or extended warranty?

Next Steps for EV6 Owners

Keep making your loan or lease payments and do not trade in the EV6 before you get advice. Gather your contract, every repair order, roadside assistance records and photos. Manufacturers generally cannot force you into arbitration using the dealer's sales contract after the Ford Motor Warranty Cases decision in 2025. For many claims there are pre-lawsuit notice and mediation steps under Code of Civil Procedure 871.20 for manufacturers that opted in, and the general four-year limit in Commercial Code 2725 still applies. A free case review is the easiest first step.

If you bought the EV6 used, ask what warranty came with the sale. After Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC (2024), a used car sold with only the leftover factory warranty generally does not qualify as a new motor vehicle under the lemon law, but certified pre-owned and other warranty claims may still be possible. If you already sold or returned the car, you may still have a claim, since California courts have held that you do not need to still own it.

Kia EV6 Lemon Law FAQ

Is a Kia EV6 covered by California lemon law?

Yes. An EV6 bought or leased new in California with Kia's factory warranty is covered by the Song-Beverly Act like any other new vehicle.

Kia keeps saying no fault was found on my EV6. What should I do?

Keep every repair order and photograph warning messages before restarting the car. Visits where the dealer could not find the problem can still count toward a lemon law claim.

Should I accept an extended warranty from Kia instead of an EV6 buyback?

Talk to a lemon law attorney before you accept anything. An offer may or may not fit your situation, and you should know your options first.

How much does a EV6 lemon law attorney cost?

Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
