An F-250 Super Duty is bought to work, tow and haul, so a steering or fuel system problem that keeps coming back hits harder than an inconvenience. California lemon law can cover these heavy-duty pickups, but questions like truck weight, business use and modifications come up more often than with a car. Here is what F-250 owners report and how to choose an attorney for this kind of truck case.

Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for an F-250 Super Duty case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.

Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.

What F-250 Super Duty Owners in California Report

California owners filed 140 NHTSA complaints about 2019 and newer F-250 Super Duty trucks between 2021 and 2026, counting each complaint once. These are reports from owners, not confirmed defects, and they do not reflect how many trucks were sold. With 140 reports, the numbers are a rough signal rather than a full picture.

Steering was the top concern, named in 34 complaints. Fuel system complaints came next with 28, then suspension (16), lights and visibility (12), engine (11) and electrical (9). Some complaints name more than one system. Model year 2019 trucks drew 59 complaints, 2021 drew 33, and 2020 drew 32; later years had only a handful each, which partly reflects less time on the road. Sacramento had the most filings (8), with smaller numbers from Apple Valley, Riverside, Roseville and Huntington Beach.

Because 2019 trucks make up so much of this data, many of those owners may already be outside the 18-month presumption window. That does not end a claim if the problem first appeared under warranty, but it makes the early repair orders even more important.

Steering, Fuel and Other Safety Questions

A steering problem on a three-quarter-ton pickup can quickly become a safety issue, especially at highway speed or while towing. Under Civil Code 1793.22(b), if a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired two or more times in the first 18 months or 18,000 miles, the law presumes Ford had a reasonable number of attempts. Fuel system faults that cause stalling or loss of power, and suspension problems that affect control, may also qualify, depending on the facts.

Other problems, such as a light that flickers or an electrical accessory that quits, usually depend on four repairs of the same issue or more than 30 days in the shop. The presumption is a shortcut, not the only path. A claim can also succeed after 18 months if the defect first showed up under warranty. If the owner's manual clearly requires direct notice to Ford, send it.

With a diesel truck, a fuel system problem may come with long shop visits while parts are ordered or the system is cleaned. Every day at the dealer for a warranty repair counts toward the 30-day total, so ask the advisor to note the full time on each repair order.

What to Tell the Ford Service Advisor

Truck problems often happen under load, so tell the advisor exactly when the symptom shows up: empty or loaded, towing or not, speed, road surface and weather. If the truck shakes, wanders or pulls, say whether it happens after a bump or at a certain speed. A video taken by a passenger can help the technician and the record.

Check the repair order before you leave. It should show your complaint, mileage, dates in and out, and every part or software update. Ford may question whether a lift, aftermarket wheels or a tuner caused the problem, so be honest about any changes and keep receipts. A modification does not automatically end a claim, but the manufacturer may argue it caused the defect. Work done at an independent shop does not count as a repair attempt.

Ask the advisor to road test the truck under the same conditions you described, including at highway speed if that is when the problem appears. If the dealer will not do that, ask that the order note your request.

  • Load, towing, speed and road conditions when it happened
  • Any warning lights or messages, with photos
  • Parts replaced, alignments, updates and recall work
  • A list of modifications and when they were installed

Ford Motor Company, Your Dealer and the Weight Rule

Ford dealers perform the repairs, but the claim is against Ford Motor Company as the manufacturer. Under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2), when Ford cannot fix a covered defect that substantially impairs use, value or safety after reasonable attempts, it must replace or repurchase the truck, and you may choose the refund.

If the truck is registered to a business, an extra rule applies. Business vehicles are covered when the business has no more than five vehicles registered in California and the vehicle is under 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Heavy-duty pickups can be rated near or above that line, so check the label on the driver's door jamb and ask an attorney before assuming either way. Our recall pages list F-250 Super Duty campaigns, including 22V013 and 23V344. Check your VIN at NHTSA.

Ford's customer relationship center can open a case file on your truck, which may help show that Ford knew about the problem. Keep the case number and write down the name of each person you speak with.

Made-Up Example: An F-250 That Will Not Track Straight

This example is invented to show the process, not a real client or result. Ray bought a new F-250 Super Duty for personal use and towing a camper. At 9,000 miles the front end began to shake violently after hitting bumps at freeway speed. The Ford dealer replaced a steering part and aligned the truck.

Three months later the shaking returned while Ray was towing. The dealer replaced another part. Ray kept both repair orders, a dashboard video his wife recorded, and a note of every call to Ford. After a third episode he asked for a free review. The attorney confirmed the truck's use and weight rating, checked that both orders described the same symptom, and explained why the steering problem might fit the two-repair safety path.

This example is about process only. It does not mean that every Super Duty with a front-end shake qualifies, and it does not describe a real settlement. Each truck's history is different.

Questions to Ask an Attorney About an F-250 Case

Choose someone who understands trucks as well as the law. Ask how they handle a manufacturer that blames tires, a lift kit or towing for a steering problem. Ask whether your use of the truck, personal, farm or business, changes anything in your case.

Ask about fees too. When an F-250 Super Duty buyer wins, Civil Code 1794(d) requires the manufacturer to pay attorney fees, costs and expenses. You pay our firm $0 out of pocket on an F-250 Super Duty case, and if we lose, you owe nothing.

You can also ask how the attorney handles a truck that is needed for work every day. Some clients worry about parking the truck during a claim. An attorney should explain your options for continuing to drive it safely and how rental or loaner costs may be recovered as incidental damages.

  • Have you handled Super Duty or other heavy-duty truck cases?
  • Does my truck's weight rating or business use affect coverage?
  • How will you answer a claim that my modifications caused the problem?
  • Is my steering problem a safety defect under the two-repair rule?

Next Steps for F-250 Super Duty Owners

Gather the purchase contract, registration, every repair order, and receipts for any accessories or modifications. Write down the truck's weight rating from the door label. Keep making payments while your claim is reviewed.

Warranty claims generally have a four-year limit under Commercial Code 2725, and the rules on timing are technical. For manufacturers that opted in, Code of Civil Procedure 871.20 adds written notice, document exchange and mediation steps for many claims. If the steering feels unsafe, park the truck and get it to a Ford dealer rather than continuing to tow. A free case review can sort out coverage and next steps.

If the truck was bought out of state, used, or as a dealer demo, mention that during your review. Coverage rules differ for those situations, and Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC (2024) narrowed which used trucks count as new motor vehicles, though other claims may still apply.

If the problem leaves the truck unsafe to drive, have it towed and keep the receipt. Towing and rental costs may be recovered as incidental damages, and a tow-in visit documents how serious the problem was. Keep a short log of every event with the date, mileage and what you were doing.

Ford F-250 SD Lemon Law FAQ

Does California lemon law cover the F-250 Super Duty?

It can. A new F-250 bought for personal use is generally covered, and a business truck is covered if the business has five or fewer vehicles registered in California and the truck is under 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. An attorney should check your truck's rating.

Will a lift kit or aftermarket wheels ruin my claim?

Not automatically. Ford may argue the modification caused the problem, so the question is whether the defect is related to the change. Keep receipts and be upfront with your attorney.

How many steering repairs do I need?

If the steering problem is likely to cause death or serious injury, two repair attempts in the first 18 months or 18,000 miles can be enough to presume a reasonable number of tries.

How much does a F-250 Super Duty lemon law attorney cost?

Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
