Transmission and powertrain complaints dominate what California F-150 owners report to NHTSA, far ahead of anything else. If your truck shifts hard, hesitates or keeps returning to the Ford dealer for the same drivetrain issue, you may have a lemon law claim. The right attorney will know how to read F-150 repair orders for repeat shifting complaints and how to count visits, days out of service and software updates.
Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for an F-150 case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.
Ford F-150: Complaints from California Drivers

| Most reported problems | Complaints |

| Lights, cameras and visibility | 28 |
| Engine | 23 |
| Brakes | 12 |
| Fuel and EV propulsion system | 9 |
Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.
F-150 Complaints From California Drivers
California drivers filed 239 complaints with NHTSA about the Ford F-150 that we counted. These are owner complaints about 2019 or newer models filed from 2021 through 2026, each counted once. They are reports, not verified defects, and they are not adjusted for sales. The F-150 is a very common truck, so a high count partly reflects how many are on California roads.
Transmission and powertrain problems stood out with 92 mentions, more than three times any other area. Electrical problems and lights, cameras and visibility each had 28, engine problems had 23, brakes 12 and fuel or EV propulsion 9. Because one complaint can mention more than one area, the categories overlap. The 2019 model year had the most complaints (65), followed by 2021 (53) and 2020 (42), then 2022 (32), 2023 and 2024 (19 each), 2025 (8) and 2026 (1). Sacramento had the most reports (7), then San Diego (6) and Murrieta (5), with Long Beach, Rancho Cucamonga and Fontana at 4 each.
NHTSA lists recalls for the F-150, including 21V090, 21V381, 21V407, 21V533, 21V653 and 21V805, which have pages on our site. A recall repair can count as a repair attempt on your truck.
Those numbers do not tell you whether your own truck qualifies. They do show that drivetrain problems are the area F-150 owners most often take the time to report, which is why repair orders for shifting complaints get close attention in these cases.
Safety Defects Versus Other F-150 Problems
Under Civil Code 1793.22(b), a defect likely to cause death or serious injury needs only two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles for the presumption. Other defects need four attempts for the same problem, or more than 30 total days out of service.
A transmission that slams into gear, slips, or leaves you without power when merging can be argued as a safety issue. So can a brake complaint or a camera that goes dark while backing a full-size truck. A rough shift that only happens in a parking lot may still be a real defect, but it is more likely to be argued under the four-repair or 30-day rule. Electrical faults depend on what they do. Some only affect convenience, while others affect lights or controls.
These rules are only a presumption. Even past 18 months or 18,000 miles, a claim can still work if the defect first appeared while the truck was under Ford's warranty.
Towing makes this question sharper. A truck that loses power or downshifts without warning while pulling a trailer can put you and others at risk. If your problem shows up mainly under load, say so on every repair order, because it may affect how the defect is classified.
What Your F-150 Repair Orders Need to Say
Shifting problems are easy to describe badly. Tell the service advisor which gears, what speed, whether the engine was cold or warm, and whether you were towing or carrying a load. Ask the Ford advisor to type your description onto the order as you said it. If the technician test drives the truck and finds nothing, that visit can still count, so ask that the order say what was tested.
Read every order before you leave the dealer. If your complaint is missing, ask for a corrected copy. A software update performed to fix the shifting or drivetrain problem you reported can count as a repair attempt, so make sure any update or relearn is listed. Work done at an independent shop, or by you, does not count toward Ford's repair attempts.
If the dealer keeps the truck for days waiting on parts, ask for a rental or loaner and keep the paperwork. Reasonable rental and towing bills for your F-150 can be added to a buyback. Repairs must be finished within 30 days unless you agree otherwise, under Civil Code 1793.2(b), so track each day the truck is gone.
- Your exact description of the shift or power problem
- Mileage and the dates in and out
- Whether the technician reproduced it on a test drive
- Any software update, relearn or parts replaced
- Fault codes and any technical service bulletin applied
Working With Ford Dealers and Ford Motor Company
Your F-150 is repaired by a Ford dealer, but the warranty comes from Ford Motor Company. The dealer fixes the truck and Ford pays for warranty work. A lemon law claim is made against Ford, not the dealer. Under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2), if Ford cannot fix a warranty defect that substantially impairs use, value or safety after a reasonable number of tries, it must replace or repurchase the truck, and you can choose a buyback. Restitution includes the price paid plus collateral charges and incidental costs, minus a mileage offset.
Many F-150s are bought for work. An F-150 owned by a business can be covered if that business has no more than five vehicles registered in California and the truck is under 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Check your truck's door sticker for its rating, and bring your registration to a case review.
If you already traded in the truck, a claim may still be possible, because a buyer does not have to still own the vehicle to pursue lemon law remedies. In Niedermeier v. FCA US LLC (2024), the California Supreme Court held that trade-in or sale money does not reduce restitution when the manufacturer's failure forced the sale. Even so, talk to an attorney before you trade in a truck with a pending problem.
If Ford is found to have willfully violated the law, a civil penalty of up to two times actual damages may be available under Civil Code 1794(c). Whether that applies depends on the facts and how Ford handled your requests.
Example (Made Up): A Truck That Keeps Shifting Hard
This is a made-up example. Luis is invented, and so is every detail of his truck. Luis bought a new F-150 for his landscaping business. Within the first year, it began shifting hard between lower gears. The dealer test drove it, could not reproduce the problem and returned it.
Luis took a video the next time it happened and showed it at his second visit. The dealer performed a software update. The problem returned, and on the third visit a part was replaced. After a fourth visit, Luis gathered his purchase contract, registration and repair orders. An attorney counted the visits and days out of service, checked the business-vehicle rules, and handled the pre-lawsuit steps.
The point of this example is the paper trail. Luis's video turned a no-problem-found visit into a documented complaint, and his registration showed the business-vehicle limits were met.
Questions for Any Attorney Reviewing Your F-150
Ask how many truck and powertrain cases the attorney has handled, and how they deal with visits marked "could not duplicate." Ask whether a work truck qualifies and what records they need to prove it. Ask how the mileage offset is figured on a truck you drive a lot.
Ask what you will pay. A winning buyer recovers attorney fees and costs from the manufacturer under Civil Code 1794(d). F-150 owners who hire us pay $0 out of pocket, and if we lose, they owe nothing. Also ask how a formal settlement offer under Code of Civil Procedure 998 would be handled, since you should always review one with your lawyer.
Ask too whether the attorney handles only the consumer side of these cases. You want someone whose job is to push the manufacturer, not someone who also defends carmakers. And ask whether they will explain each pre-lawsuit step in writing before anything is filed.
- Does my work use change anything?
- Do my no-problem-found visits count?
- How is my mileage offset calculated?
- Who pays your fees?
F-150 Next Steps

Ford F-150 Lemon Law FAQ
Can a hard-shifting F-150 qualify under California lemon law?
It can if the shifting problem is covered by Ford's warranty, substantially impairs use, value or safety, and was not fixed after a reasonable number of tries. Repair orders that show repeat visits for the same symptom are the key evidence.
I use my F-150 for my business. Am I covered?
Possibly. A business vehicle can qualify if the business has no more than five vehicles registered in California and the truck is under 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
Do I sue the Ford dealer or Ford?
A lemon law claim is against Ford Motor Company, the warrantor. The dealer is where the repair attempts happen, and its repair orders prove them.
How much does a F-150 lemon law attorney cost?
Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
