The engine led with 15 complaints. The electrical system and driver-assist and collision warning systems had 10 each, brakes had 6, and lights, cameras and visibility and suspension had 4 each. A single complaint can name several components, so these categories overlap.

The 2020 model year had the most reports (27), followed by 2019 (16) and 2022 (8). The data shows no 2021 MDX complaints, and 2023 through 2026 each had 5 or fewer. San Jose had the most by city (6), with Sunnyvale and San Diego at 3, and Fullerton, Vacaville and Chino Hills at 2. These numbers are too small to show a local pattern.

Civil Code 1793.22(b) presumes a reasonable number of repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles if a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired at least twice, the same defect was repaired at least four times, or the SUV was out of service more than 30 days. If the owner's manual clearly requires you to notify the manufacturer directly, follow it.

An engine problem that causes the MDX to stall, hesitate badly when accelerating into traffic or lose power may be argued as a safety defect. Driver-assist braking without reason, a collision warning that fails, or a brake complaint that is not resolved can fit as well. Suspension problems that affect handling may also raise safety questions.

Electrical faults that affect screens or comfort features usually are treated as non-safety defects, and those claims tend to rest on four repairs or more than 30 days in the shop. A claim can still succeed after 18 months or 18,000 miles if the defect first appeared under warranty.

What to Tell the Acura Service Advisor

Describe what the MDX did in plain terms: the speed, whether the engine light came on, whether it shook, hesitated or shut off, and whether you had passengers. Note the date and mileage, and photograph the dash before you restart. If the problem only happens when the engine is cold or hot, say so.

Ask that your complaint go on the repair order in your words. A software update done to fix your complaint can count as a repair attempt, so make sure it is listed. Keep orders where no problem was found, since those visits can still count. Repairs by an independent shop or by you do not count toward the manufacturer's attempts.

Under Civil Code 1793.2(b), warranty repairs on your MDX must be completed within 30 days unless you agree otherwise. Write down the drop-off and pick-up dates for every visit, because the days add up toward the 30-day part of the presumption.

Acura is Honda's luxury brand, and its U.S. warranty is backed by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Your Acura dealer performs the repairs, but if the manufacturer cannot fix a warranty defect that substantially impairs the MDX's use, value or safety after a reasonable number of attempts, Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2) requires a repurchase or replacement, and you may choose the refund.
