What California RDX Owners Report to NHTSA

California owners filed 72 complaints with NHTSA about 2019 and newer RDX models from 2021 through 2026, each counted once. These are owner reports, not verified defects, and they are not adjusted for how many RDXs were sold. Seventy-two reports is a small sample, so small categories mean little by themselves.

Lights, cameras and visibility led with 14 complaints. Engine complaints came next with 8, then fuel system (6), brakes (6), body and structure (4) and airbags (4). A single RDX complaint can name several systems. The 2019 model year drew 33 complaints, nearly half the total, followed by 2020 (15) and 2021 (13). Later years had five or fewer. Sacramento owners filed 5, San Jose and Los Angeles 4 each, and Lakewood and Fremont 3 each.

Because so many of these complaints involve 2019 vehicles, many of those owners are past the 18-month presumption window. A claim can still succeed if the defect first appeared under warranty, so early repair orders are important.

Which RDX Problems May Be Safety Defects

Civil Code 1793.22(b) presumes a reasonable number of attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles if a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired at least twice, if the same defect was repaired at least four times, or if the vehicle was out of service more than 30 days in total.

For an RDX, a backup camera that goes dark while reversing, headlights that fail, a windshield or mirror problem that blocks your view, an engine that stalls, or a brake issue may fit the safety path, depending on the facts. An infotainment glitch or a rattle usually would not. An airbag warning light that stays on is worth reporting right away and describing exactly.

The presumption is not the only route to an RDX buyback. A claim can be proven with the full repair history, and if the owner's manual clearly requires direct notice to Acura, provide it in writing.

Engine and fuel complaints should be described with the same care. If the RDX hesitated, lost power, stalled or gave off a fuel smell, say so on the repair order and note where it happened. Those details help show whether a defect is likely to cause serious injury and should be treated under the two-repair path.

What to Tell the Acura Advisor

Visibility and camera problems tend to come and go. Take a photo or video of the dark camera screen, the flickering light or the warning message as soon as it happens. Note the date, mileage, weather and time of day. Bring those to the dealer and ask that your description go on the repair order.

When you pick up the RDX, read the order before you leave. It should show your complaint, the dates in and out, the mileage, and any part, software update or recall work. Software work done to fix your reported problem can count as a repair attempt. Keep orders that say could not duplicate, since those visits can still count. Repairs at an independent shop do not count against Acura.

If the dealer keeps the RDX for days, ask for a loaner. Days at the dealer for warranty repairs count toward the 30-day total, and repairs must be completed within 30 days unless you agree otherwise under Civil Code 1793.2(b).

Airbag warning lights deserve their own note. If one comes on, photograph it, write down the date and mileage, and get the RDX to an Acura dealer soon. Ask the advisor to record exactly what the light said and whether it stayed on or came and went.

American Honda, Acura Dealers and Your Claim

Acura is Honda's luxury brand, so the manufacturer on an RDX claim is American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Acura dealers perform the repairs. Under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2), if the manufacturer cannot fix a covered defect that substantially impairs use, value or safety after a reasonable number of attempts, it must replace or repurchase the RDX, and you may choose the refund.

A refund generally covers what you paid or owe, including sales tax and registration, plus incidental costs such as towing or rentals, minus a mileage offset for miles driven before the first repair visit for the problem. The manufacturer may offer a goodwill repair, an extended warranty or a loyalty incentive toward a new vehicle. Those offers are not the same as a buyback, and some include a release. You do not have to use a manufacturer arbitration program before using the Song-Beverly Act. If you choose one, the decision binds the manufacturer only if you accept it. Keep notes of every call to Acura's customer line, with dates and case numbers.

Made-Up Example: An RDX With a Failing Camera

This example is made up to show the process. It does not describe an actual RDX owner or outcome. Omar bought a new RDX. Within the first year, the rear camera screen went black several times while he was backing out of tight parking spots. His Acura dealer could not reproduce it on the first visit and wrote that on the order.

Omar began recording the blank screen with his phone. On the second visit, the dealer watched the videos and replaced a part. The problem came back, and the third visit included a software update. Omar gathered his contract, all three orders and his videos, then asked for a free review.
