The Mazda CX-30 is a small crossover, and California owners filed 30 complaints with NHTSA about 2020 and newer models. Engine reports lead that short list, followed by speed control. The total is small, but a single CX-30 that keeps going back to the Mazda dealer for the same problem can still qualify under California lemon law. Here is what to look for in an attorney for that kind of case.

Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for a CX-30 case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.

Mazda CX-30: Complaints from California Drivers

Since January 2021, California drivers filed 30 safety complaints with NHTSA about 2019 or newer Mazda CX-30 vehicles.

Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.

California CX-30 Complaint Data

California drivers filed 30 complaints with NHTSA about CX-30 models from 2020 on, filed between 2021 and 2026. Each complaint counts once, though one report can mention several systems. These are owner reports, not confirmed defects, and they are not adjusted for sales. With only 30 reports, every category is small.

Engine issues lead with 8. Speed control follows at 4, electrical at 3, and airbags, driver-assist and brakes at 2 each. The 2021 model year has 13 complaints, almost half the total, and no other year has more than 4. Los Angeles had 6 complaints, and Bellflower, San Francisco, San Diego and Riverside had 2 each.

Numbers this low tell you very little about any single car. Their main use is to show which symptoms CX-30 owners noticed enough to report, so you can describe yours clearly.

The 2021 count stands out, but model years with more cars on the road usually produce more reports. That alone does not mean a 2021 CX-30 is more likely to have a problem than another year.

Which CX-30 Problems May Affect Safety

Speed control complaints deserve close attention. A crossover that speeds up, slows down or will not hold speed when you expect it to can cause a crash. That may be a defect likely to cause death or serious injury, and under Civil Code 1793.22(b) two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles can create the presumption. Airbag warnings, brake problems and engine faults that cause stalling or loss of power can fit the same group.

An engine that runs rough at idle or makes noise without affecting how the car drives may still be a substantial impairment, but it usually depends on four repairs for the same problem or more than 30 days out of service. Electrical problems vary in the same way.

The presumption is helpful, but it is not required. A CX-30 with repeat repairs for the same warranty problem may qualify even outside 18 months or 18,000 miles if the defect first appeared under warranty.

If the car surged or slowed while driver-assist features were on, note which ones were active. That detail helps the technician and anyone reviewing the records later understand what the car was doing.

What to Tell the Mazda Service Department

For a speed control or acceleration complaint, describe exactly what happened: the speed, whether cruise control was on, whether you were pressing the pedal, and what the car did. For engine complaints, describe the noise, vibration, light or loss of power and when it happens. Ask the advisor to write your description on the repair order.

Read the CX-30 repair order before you leave. It should show your complaint, the mileage, the dates and the work done or the tests performed. A software update installed on your CX-30 to fix your complaint can count as a repair attempt. A visit where the dealer could not duplicate the problem can still count. Work at an independent shop does not count toward Mazda's attempts.

Keep track of time at the dealer, too. Civil Code 1793.2(b) says warranty repairs must be completed within 30 days unless you agree otherwise, and more than 30 total days out of service in the first 18 months or 18,000 miles is enough for the presumption on its own.

If the dealer keeps your CX-30 overnight, ask for a loaner or rental and keep the paperwork. Rental and towing receipts can be part of a refund and help prove how long the car was out of service.

  • Your description of what the car did
  • Whether cruise control or driver-assist was on
  • Tests, codes, parts and updates
  • CX-30 mileage and dates in and out

Who Stands Behind a CX-30 Warranty

Mazda dealers repair the car, but Mazda Motor of America, Inc. issues the warranty. Under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2), when a warranty defect that substantially impairs the car is not fixed after a reasonable number of attempts, Mazda must replace or repurchase the CX-30, and you can choose the refund.

The CX-30 refund includes the price paid or payable, sales tax, license and registration, and incidental costs, minus a mileage offset based on the miles before your first visit for the defect. If you financed, the lender is paid off as part of the deal. If you leased, the manufacturer typically pays off the leasing company and refunds what you paid toward the lease.

Mazda may offer customer care help or a goodwill repair before any of that. Keep a log of calls, and do not sign a release without having it reviewed. If your owner's manual tells you to notify Mazda directly about an unrepaired defect, do that in writing.

Keep making your loan or lease payments while the claim is open. Missed payments can hurt your credit and lead to repossession, and they do not speed up a claim.

Made-Up Example: A CX-30 That Surges

This is a made-up CX-30 example to show how the process works. It does not describe a real person or outcome. Mei bought a new CX-30 and noticed the car surged forward a few times while she was easing into traffic. She wrote down each date and location and described the surges to the dealer, which noted her complaint and ran tests without finding a code.

When it happened again, the dealer installed a software update, listed on the second repair order. After another surge, Mei took her notes and both repair orders to a lemon law attorney. The attorney explained that unexpected acceleration may be treated as a safety issue, checked her dates against the 18-month window, and helped her send written notice to Mazda. She kept making her payments the whole time.

Mei's notes made the difference in showing a pattern. Each one matched what she told the dealer, which helped the attorney show one continuing defect. This CX-30 example shows the process only.

During this time Mei kept driving only when she felt safe, and she used a rideshare on days the car was at the dealer, saving the receipts. Reasonable transportation costs may be part of incidental damages, depending on the facts.

Questions to Ask a CX-30 Lemon Law Attorney

Since statewide numbers for this model are small, the attorney's attention to your own records matters most. Ask how they will review them and what they will need from you.

Watch out for anyone who promises a result or rushes you to sign. A good attorney explains the risks as well as the strengths.

Ask whether the attorney will look at your sale contract for add-ons and any trade-in. Those details can change how a refund is figured on a small crossover bought with financing.

  • Have you handled Mazda engine or speed control claims?
  • Do visits where nothing was found still count?
  • How will you handle the pre-lawsuit steps under Code of Civil Procedure 871.20 for my CX-30 if they apply?
  • If Mazda makes an offer under Code of Civil Procedure 998, how will you advise me?
  • What will I owe if my CX-30 case does not succeed?

Next Steps for CX-30 Owners

Collect your repair orders, your contract and any notes of when the problem happened. Look up your CX-30 VIN with the NHTSA recall lookup. Our site has CX-30 recall pages such as 21V086 and 24V649, and a recall repair can count as a repair attempt when it addressed your complaint.

Then ask for a free review of your CX-30 case. For your CX-30 claim you pay $0 out of pocket, the manufacturer pays attorney fees when you win under Civil Code 1794(d), and if we lose you owe nothing. Warranty claims generally must be filed within four years under Commercial Code 2725, so call while your records are fresh, and talk to an attorney before trading in the car.

If you filed an NHTSA complaint about the CX-30, keep a copy. It does not prove a defect, but it shows when you reported the problem and what you said.

Mazda CX-30 Lemon Law FAQ

Can a CX-30 qualify for a buyback with only a few complaints statewide?

Yes. A claim depends on your own vehicle's repair history, not how many other owners filed complaints. What matters is a warranty defect that was not fixed after a reasonable number of attempts.

Is unexpected acceleration a safety defect?

It may be. A car that speeds up or slows down without warning can cause a crash, so two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles may be enough for the presumption.

Who pays my attorney?

If you win, Mazda pays your attorney fees and costs under Civil Code 1794(d). You pay $0 out of pocket on a CX-30 case.

How much does a CX-30 lemon law attorney cost?

Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
