The Lexus NX is a compact luxury SUV, and California owners filed 33 complaints with NHTSA about 2019 or newer models. Electrical issues lead a list spread across brakes, visibility, engine, fuel and door latches. Luxury buyers expect a car that works, and when an NX keeps going back to the Lexus dealer for the same problem, it may qualify under California lemon law.

Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for an NX case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.

Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.

California NX Complaints in Context

Our data counts 33 complaints that California drivers filed with NHTSA about 2019 or newer NX models, filed from 2021 through 2026. A complaint is counted once even if it lists several systems. These are NX owner reports, not proven defects, and they are not adjusted for sales. A total this small spreads thin across categories.

Electrical complaints lead with 7. Brakes follow at 4, and visibility, engine and fuel or propulsion have 3 each. Door latch and lock complaints have 2. The 2024 model year has the most reports (10), followed by 2022 (7) and 2020 (5), with the other years at 4 or fewer. Corona, Whittier, Jurupa Valley and Riverside had 2 reports each, and Beverly Hills and Victorville had 1 each.

Because the counts are so low, the NX data mostly shows the kinds of problems owners notice. Your claim will rest on your own repair orders.

The 2024 model year has the most reports here, which may simply reflect how many newer NX models are on the road. A single model year count is not a judgment about any one vehicle.

NX Problems That May Count as Safety Defects

Some of the NX complaint groups are clear safety concerns. Brakes that feel soft or grab, a door that will not latch, or a visibility problem that blocks your view can all put people at risk. Defects like these may be likely to cause death or serious injury, and under Civil Code 1793.22(b) two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles may be enough for the presumption.

Electrical faults depend on the symptom. Losing the camera view or dash lights may be a safety concern, while a phone connection that drops usually is not. Non-safety NX defects need four repairs for the same problem or more than 30 days out of service to reach the presumption. Civil Code 1793.2(b) also requires repairs to be completed within 30 days unless you agree otherwise.

If your NX falls outside the 18-month window, it may still qualify. A repeat warranty defect that first showed up while the warranty was in effect can support a claim even when the presumption does not apply.

If you notice a brake, latch or visibility problem while driving, pull over when safe and write a short note: the date, the place and what happened. Notes made right away carry much more weight than memories pieced together months later.

Talking to the Lexus Service Advisor

A comfortable waiting room and a quick loaner are nice, but they are not the same as a good record. Be specific about what happened: which screen or feature failed, which door would not latch, or how the brakes felt, along with the date, the speed and the conditions. Show photos or video if you have them.

Before you leave, read the repair order. Your complaint should be there in your words, with the mileage, the dates and what the technician did or found. A software update meant to fix your complaint can count as a repair attempt, and a visit where the problem could not be reproduced can count too. Work done at an independent shop does not count toward the manufacturer's attempts.

If you were given a loaner, keep the paperwork. It shows how long your NX was out of service. If you paid for a tow or rental yourself, save those receipts, since incidental costs can be part of a refund.

Who Is Responsible for an NX Buyback

Lexus is Toyota's luxury brand, and the U.S. company usually named in a Lexus claim is Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. Lexus dealers do the repairs, but under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2) the manufacturer must replace or repurchase an NX it cannot fix after a reasonable number of attempts. With an NX, you can choose a refund instead of a replacement.

A refund covers the price paid or payable, sales tax, license and registration, and incidental costs, minus a mileage offset based on the miles before your first visit for the defect. Many NX buyers lease. In a lease buyback, the manufacturer typically pays off the leasing company and refunds what you paid toward the lease, minus the offset.

Lexus may offer goodwill repairs or a trade offer. Read any paperwork carefully and have an attorney review it before you sign. If your owner's manual asks you to notify the manufacturer directly about an unrepaired defect, do that in writing and keep a copy.

If you financed the NX instead of leasing it, the lender is paid off as part of a repurchase, and any remaining amount goes to you. Keep your payments current until the claim is final.

Made-Up Example: An NX Door That Will Not Latch

This is a made-up example to show the steps. It does not describe a real NX client or result. Grace leased a new NX. A few months in, the rear door sometimes would not latch, and a warning appeared while she was driving. She recorded a short video and took the SUV to her Lexus dealer, which noted her complaint and adjusted the latch.

The problem returned, and on the second visit the dealer replaced a part. When the warning appeared again, Grace brought both repair orders and her video to a lemon law attorney. The attorney explained that a door that will not stay closed may be treated as a safety issue, confirmed her dates, and helped her send written notice to the manufacturer. Grace kept her lease payments current and did not turn the NX in early.

What made Grace's records useful was that each repair order described the same latch problem in similar words, and her video showed the warning on the screen. That made it easy to show one ongoing defect rather than separate complaints. This NX example shows the process only.

What to Ask an NX Lemon Law Attorney

A good attorney will explain how they handle claims involving luxury vehicles and leases, and will be honest about the strengths and weaknesses of your case.

Ask also how the attorney stays in touch. You should know who your contact is and how often you can expect updates.

Ask, too, whether the attorney will review your contract for luxury packages, service plans and any trade-in. Those items can change the refund math, and a careful attorney will want to see the paperwork before giving numbers.

You can also ask whether a manufacturer arbitration program makes sense for you. For an NX owner, those programs are free and bind the manufacturer only if you accept the decision, but they are generally not required before a California Song-Beverly claim.

  • Have you handled Lexus claims against Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.?
  • How does a lease buyback work on my NX?
  • Do visits where the dealer found nothing still count?
  • Will pre-lawsuit steps under Code of Civil Procedure 871.20 apply if the manufacturer opted in?
  • What do I owe if we lose my NX case?

Next Steps for NX Owners

Gather your repair orders, your purchase or lease contract and any photos or videos. Look up your NX VIN with the NHTSA recall lookup. Our site has a recall page for the NX, 26V162, and a recall repair can count as a repair attempt when it addressed your complaint.

Then ask for a free review of your NX case. For your NX claim you pay $0 out of pocket, the manufacturer pays attorney fees when you win under Civil Code 1794(d), and if we lose you owe nothing. NX warranty claims generally must be filed within four years under Commercial Code 2725. If your lease is ending soon, call before you return the SUV.

If you filed a complaint with NHTSA about the NX, save a copy. It does not prove a defect, but it shows when you reported the problem.

Is a leased Lexus NX covered by California lemon law?

Yes. Leased vehicles are covered. A lease buyback usually refunds what you paid toward the lease and pays off the leasing company, minus a mileage offset.

Who do I file an NX claim against?

The claim is usually against Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., the U.S. company behind the Lexus warranty. Your attorney handles that contact for your NX.

Can an electrical problem on an NX qualify?

It can if the problem is covered by the warranty, substantially impairs the SUV and was not fixed after a reasonable number of attempts.

How much does a NX lemon law attorney cost?

Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
