The Land Rover Defender returned to the U.S. market for the 2020 model year as a rugged luxury SUV. California owners who filed NHTSA complaints most often mentioned lights, cameras and visibility, along with electrical problems. If your Defender keeps going back to a Land Rover retailer for the same issue, a lemon law attorney can review the repair orders and tell you whether the manufacturer may owe you a buyback.
Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for a Defender case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.

Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.
What California Defender Owners Have Reported
California owners filed 42 complaints with NHTSA about Defender models from 2020 onward, filed between 2021 and 2026. We counted each once. Every report reflects an owner's view, not a verified defect, and sales are not factored in. Forty-two reports is a small number.
Lights, cameras and visibility were the top category (13), followed closely by electrical problems (12). Airbags (4), engine (3), driver-assist (2) and body or structure (1) followed. A single report can fall in more than one category.
The 2022 model year had the most reports (14), then 2023 (9), 2021 (7), 2020 (6) and 2024 (4), with 2 for 2026. San Jose, San Francisco and West Covina had 3 each, and South Pasadena, Redondo Beach and Palo Alto had 2 each. These small numbers show what some owners took time to report. They do not prove that any particular Defender has a defect.
The visibility and electrical groups (13 and 12) are far larger than any other category in this small set, and the 2022 model year alone accounts for a third of the reports.
Camera, Lighting and Electrical Faults as Safety Defects
Cameras and lights help you see and be seen. A rear or surround camera that goes black while you are backing up, headlights that fail at night, or turn signals that stop working may be defects likely to cause death or serious injury. Civil Code 1793.22(b) lets a presumption arise for such defects after two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles. Airbag warnings fall in the same group.
Other electrical faults depend on their effect. A Defender that will not start or loses power is a serious concern. A screen that reboots or a feature that disappears for a day is more likely an ordinary defect, which needs four repairs for the same problem or more than 30 days out of service for the presumption.
Land Rover has issued recalls on the Defender, including 21V424 and 22V523, and recall repairs can count as repair attempts. If the defect first appeared under warranty, you may still have a claim after 18 months or 18,000 miles.
Airbag complaints (4) were fewer, but an airbag warning that keeps coming back is the kind of problem that may be treated as a safety defect. Even a parking sensor can matter if it fails along with the cameras.
Documenting Defender Problems at the Retailer
Camera and electrical faults often come and go. When the camera goes black or the lights act up, take a quick video with your phone. When you bring the Defender in, show the advisor the video and explain exactly what happened, what you were doing and how often it happens.
Ask that your complaint be written on the order in your words. Before you leave, check that the order shows the mileage, the dates in and out and the work done. If the retailer installed a software update to fix your problem, it should be listed, because that can count as a repair attempt. Repairs at an independent shop are not counted against the manufacturer.
If the camera fails only at certain times, such as in bright sun, at night or after the SUV sits, tell the advisor. Patterns like these help a technician track down an intermittent fault. Ask the retailer to print any stored fault codes and attach them to the order.
- Videos of camera or lighting failures, with the date
- Photos of warning messages on the display
- Codes found, software updates and modules replaced
- Battery tests or no-start events
- Days out of service and loaner dates
Jaguar Land Rover North America and Your Claim
Land Rover retailers repair the Defender, but the warranty is backed by Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC, the brand's U.S. company. The claim is brought against the manufacturer rather than the retailer.
Where the warranty booklet clearly calls for direct notice to the manufacturer, put it in writing and save a copy. If Land Rover customer relations offers a goodwill repair or an extended warranty, do not sign anything until an attorney has reviewed it.
Civil Code 1793.2(b) requires the repairs to be done within 30 days unless you agree to more time. Electrical repairs that wait on parts can stretch for weeks. Keep a record of every day the Defender is out of service, even with a loaner.
If the closest Land Rover retailer is far from home, warranty work still needs to go through an authorized retailer to count. Save towing receipts, which can be part of a buyback when the costs are reasonable.
If you bought the Defender used or certified pre-owned, the rules changed after the 2024 Rodriguez v. FCA US decision, though other claims may still be available. For a new Defender, a buyback under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2) returns the price paid or payable, with sales tax and registration, plus reasonable incidental costs, less a mileage offset.
Made-Up Example: A Defender Camera That Keeps Going Black
This example is invented and shows the process only. It is not a real client or a result. Omar bought a new Defender. A few months later, the rear camera went black while he was backing out of a crowded parking lot, and a warning message appeared. The retailer could not reproduce it.
Omar filmed the next failure. On the second visit, the retailer updated software and kept the SUV for four days. When the camera went black again and the headlights flickered on the way home, Omar gathered his contract, both orders and the videos and asked a lemon law attorney for a free review. The attorney explained that a camera that fails while backing up may be a safety defect, counted the days out of service, and outlined the notice to Jaguar Land Rover North America.
Omar's videos were the key piece, because the retailer never saw the camera fail during a visit. He also kept the loaner paperwork, which showed the dates his Defender was at the retailer.
Questions to Ask a Lawyer About a Defender Case
Ask whether the attorney has handled claims against Jaguar Land Rover North America, and how they handle electrical or camera problems the retailer could not reproduce. Ask which records you are missing and how to get them.
Ask about fees. A winning buyer's attorney fees, costs and expenses are paid by the manufacturer under Civil Code 1794(d). You will not pay anything out of pocket with our firm ($0), and a loss costs you nothing. Ask how a buyback would be calculated under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2), and how pre-lawsuit notice and mediation steps under Code of Civil Procedure 871.20 apply to many claims for manufacturers that opted in.
Ask whether the firm represents only consumers and who will be your main contact. If you take your Defender off-road, ask how the attorney would respond if the manufacturer blamed that use, and keep records of any accessories added. Ask, too, how two problems at once, such as a camera failure and a separate electrical fault, would be handled.
- Is my camera or lighting problem a safety defect?
- Will the visits for software updates count?
- How would my mileage offset be calculated?
- What if Land Rover offers a trade-in instead?
Next Steps for Defender Owners
Gather your contract, every repair order and any videos or photos. Keep a log of each failure with the date and mileage. Stay current on your loan or lease payments while the claim is open.
If a warning says the SUV is unsafe to drive, stop, have it towed to the retailer and keep the towing record. Back up your videos and photos to cloud storage or email so they are not lost if your phone is replaced. Lease customers should file the lease and monthly statements with everything else.
Search NHTSA's recall site with your VIN, and tell NHTSA about any safety issue you have had. Under Commercial Code 2725, warranty claims generally have to be brought within four years. For a no-cost review of your repair history, call 877-536-6620 or use the form on this page.

Land Rover Defender Lemon Law FAQ
Can a Land Rover Defender with camera problems qualify for lemon law?
A Defender with repeat repairs for a camera or lighting problem may qualify. If the problem affects safety, two repair attempts within 18 months or 18,000 miles can be enough for the presumption.
Who is the claim against for a Land Rover Defender?
Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC backs the warranty, so the claim is made against it, not the retailer.
Do I need videos of my Defender's electrical problems?
They help a lot. Videos show what happened when the retailer could not reproduce the problem.
How much does a Defender lemon law attorney cost?
Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
