The Porsche Taycan is an all-electric performance car, and the complaints California owners file with NHTSA reflect that. Electrical problems are named far more than anything else, with powertrain, brake and driver-assist complaints behind them. If your Taycan keeps going back to a Porsche dealer for the same issue, an attorney who understands EV and software-related claims can help you decide whether you have a lemon law case.

Short answer: the best lemon law attorney for a Taycan case knows this type of claim, charges you nothing, will go to trial when a manufacturer will not be fair, tells you who will handle your case, and has real reviews you can check.

Porsche Taycan: Complaints from California Drivers

Since January 2021, California drivers filed 75 safety complaints with NHTSA about 2019 or newer Porsche Taycan vehicles.

Source: NHTSA consumer complaint data, California complaints received January 2021 through early October 2026, model year 2019 and newer, counted once per complaint. Models with more vehicles on the road tend to get more complaints.

What California Taycan Owners Report to NHTSA

Our data counts 75 complaints filed with NHTSA by California owners of the Porsche Taycan, covering 2019 or newer models and complaints filed from 2021 through 2026. Each Taycan complaint is counted once. These are owner reports, not confirmed defects, and the numbers are not adjusted for how many Taycans were sold.

Electrical problems lead with 32 complaints, close to half of the total. Transmission and powertrain follows with 9, then service brakes (7), driver-assist and collision warning (6), and EV propulsion and engine with 4 each. The engine and propulsion labels are NHTSA's category names. The Taycan has no gas engine, so those labels do not describe one. A single Taycan complaint can name more than one system.

The earliest model years have the most complaints: 2020 (23), 2022 (20) and 2021 (18). After that, 2023 has 8, 2024 has 5 and 2025 has 1. San Francisco owners filed 5 complaints, Clovis and Irvine 4 each, Los Angeles and Campbell 3 each, and Manhattan Beach 2.

These small numbers are useful only as background. A Taycan with repeat repairs for the same electrical problem may qualify under California law, but your car's own repair history decides that.

Electrical and Propulsion Faults: Safety or Not?

Civil Code 1793.22(b) presumes a reasonable number of repair attempts within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles if a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired at least twice. For other defects, it takes four repairs of the same defect or more than 30 total days out of service.

On an EV, electrical faults can be serious. A sudden loss of drive power, a car that will not move after a stop, or a warning that limits power while you are on the freeway can put you at risk. Brake and driver-assist problems may also fall into the safety group. A screen that freezes or a charging port that will not unlock is usually a comfort issue, though repeated failures can still support a claim under the four-repair or 30-day paths.

If your Taycan is past 18 months or 18,000 miles, you may still have options. The presumption is not the only way to prove a case. What matters is that the defect first appeared under warranty and was not fixed after a reasonable number of attempts.

Software Updates, Error Messages and Your Records

Many electrical problems on modern EVs are addressed with software. A software update done to fix the problem you reported can count as a repair attempt, whether it is done at the dealer or delivered remotely. Make sure the dealer's repair order lists any update performed and connects it to your complaint. If an update arrives remotely, take a screenshot of the update notice and the date.

Error messages often clear on their own. Take a photo or video each time one appears, with the date, the state of charge and what you were doing. Note whether it happened while charging, while driving, or after the car sat. When you drop off the Taycan, show the advisor the photos and ask that your complaint be written as you describe it.

If the dealer cannot reproduce the problem, the visit can still count. California courts have said buyers do not need to prove the exact technical cause of a defect.

  • Photos or videos of every warning or error message
  • Screenshots of remote update notices with dates
  • State of charge and conditions when the fault happened
  • Updates, parts and tests listed on each repair order
  • Dates in and out and the Taycan's mileage

Porsche Cars North America and the Dealer

Authorized Porsche dealers perform the repairs, but the new vehicle warranty is backed by Porsche Cars North America, Inc., and that is the company a lemon law claim is brought against. Under Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2), if Porsche cannot fix a covered defect that substantially impairs use, value or safety after a reasonable number of attempts, it must replace the car or buy it back. You choose which.

A buyback refunds the price paid or payable, including sales tax and registration, plus reasonable incidental costs like towing and rental cars, minus a mileage offset based on the miles at your first visit for the problem. For an expensive car, those details matter, so keep every receipt.

Our site has pages for NHTSA recalls that list the Taycan, including 21V486 and 21V794. A recall repair on your Taycan can count as a repair attempt. Enter your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup to see which recalls apply.

For manufacturers that opted in to AB 1755 (Code of Civil Procedure 871.20 and following), there are added pre-lawsuit notice, document exchange and mediation steps. An attorney can tell you how they apply to a claim against Porsche. If your purchase contract has an arbitration clause, the California Supreme Court held in 2025 that manufacturers generally cannot use the dealer's contract to force buyers into arbitration.

Made-Up Example: A Taycan That Kept Losing Drive Power

This Taycan example is made up. It does not describe a real Taycan owner or a real result. Nathan bought a new Taycan and drove it on the freeways around the Bay Area. In the first year, a drive system warning appeared twice and the car limited its power while he was merging. Both times the warning cleared after he parked and restarted.

Nathan photographed the warning and took the car to his Porsche dealer. The first visit ended with a software update. The second ended with a part replaced after the car waited several days for parts. When the warning returned a third time, he gathered his purchase contract, both repair orders, his photos and his screenshots of a remote update and asked a lemon law attorney for a free review. The attorney explained that a loss of power while merging may be a safety defect, counted both repairs, and checked which warranty coverage applied to the drive system at the time.

Nathan kept making his payments and kept using authorized Porsche dealers. His attorney handled the communication with Porsche from there. Because the car had a long wait for parts on one visit, the attorney also added up the total days out of service, which can matter for the 30-day path.

Choosing an Attorney for a Taycan Case

EV claims involve software, battery and drive system questions that a gas car case may not. Ask questions like these.

You can confirm any California attorney's license on the State Bar of California website. Be wary of anyone who names a result before reviewing your records.

A strong Taycan attorney will also ask how you charge the car, where you take it for service and whether any accessories or wheels were added. Those questions are not traps. They help the attorney answer the manufacturer's likely questions before they come up.

  • Have you handled electrical or EV claims against Porsche?
  • Do the software updates on my repair orders count as repair attempts?
  • Which warranty covered each of my repairs?
  • Is my loss of power likely to be treated as a safety defect?
  • What will I owe if we win or lose?

Next Steps for California Taycan Owners

Gather your sales or lease contract, the warranty booklet, every repair order, and your photos and screenshots. Keep making the Taycan loan or lease payments. Do not take the problem to an independent shop, because only Porsche and its authorized dealers can make repair attempts that count.

If you bought your Taycan used or certified pre-owned, ask about it. After Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC (2024), a used car with only the leftover factory warranty is generally not a new motor vehicle under the lemon law's vehicle section, but a CPO warranty or other warranty law may still apply.

If your Taycan claim succeeds, the manufacturer pays your attorney fees and costs under Civil Code 1794(d), so you pay $0 out of pocket. A Taycan warranty claim generally must be filed within four years (Commercial Code 2725). Call 877-536-6620 or use the form on this page for a free review of your Taycan.

Can a Porsche Taycan with electrical problems qualify under California lemon law?

It can. A Taycan with repeat warranty repairs for the same electrical problem may qualify for a buyback or replacement if Porsche could not fix it after a reasonable number of attempts.

Do software updates count as repair attempts on a Taycan?

They can. If an update was done to fix the problem you reported, it may count as a repair attempt. Keep the repair order or a screenshot of the update notice.

Who is the lemon law claim against for a Taycan?

The claim is against Porsche Cars North America, Inc., the company that backs the new vehicle warranty, not the dealer that did the repairs.

How much does a Taycan lemon law attorney cost?

Usually nothing. California Civil Code section 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs when you win. At America's Lemon Lawyer you pay $0, win or lose.
