Infiniti is Nissan's luxury brand, and its SUVs, especially the QX60 and QX80, make up much of what you see at Infiniti retailers in California. If yours has spent more time in the service bay than you expected, and the same warning light or noise keeps coming back, keep reading. This page walks through how California lemon law applies to an Infiniti and what you can do now to protect your claim.
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Civil Code sections 1790 to 1795.8) says that if a manufacturer cannot repair a warranty defect in a new vehicle after a reasonable number of attempts, it must replace the vehicle or repurchase it. That covers new Infinitis bought or leased in California. We also take certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles with a new-car warranty. After Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC (2024), ordinary used vehicles sold with only the remainder of the original warranty generally no longer qualify as "new motor vehicles."
Infiniti Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law
Infiniti's warranty information booklet and owner site list the following coverage for a new Infiniti, with each term ending at the time or mileage limit, whichever comes first:
- Basic coverage: 4 years (48 months) or 60,000 miles.
- Powertrain coverage: 6 years (72 months) or 70,000 miles.
- Corrosion (perforation) coverage: 7 years (84 months) with unlimited mileage.
Terms can change by model year, so compare these with the booklet for your vehicle. The in-service date on your purchase or lease paperwork tells you when each term started. Infiniti certified pre-owned vehicles carry their own limited warranty. Sources describe that coverage differently, so rely on the warranty document you received at purchase instead of a dealer summary.
The 4-year basic term is the coverage most lemon law claims depend on. It covers the electrical, infotainment and driver-assist problems that show up in complaints, not just the engine and transmission. The lemon law protects you when Infiniti fails to fix a defect covered by its express warranty, so a problem first reported inside that window is far stronger than one first reported after it.
The booklet also describes the BBB AUTO LINE dispute program. Some state laws require using a program like it before certain claims. Before you file with BBB AUTO LINE or sign any release, talk to a lawyer about whether it helps or hurts your case.

Common Infiniti Problems in Recalls and Complaints
Infiniti's numbers are smaller than mass-market brands, but they still point to clear patterns. According to NHTSA recall and complaint data, Infiniti has issued 17 recalls since the 2021 model year, and owners have filed 359 complaints with NHTSA about those model years. Because Infiniti shares parts and engineering with Nissan, several of these campaigns also cover Nissan models, and our recall pages for them are filed under Nissan.
Recalls by system
Back over prevention and seats tie as the most frequent recall components, with 3 recalls each. Back over prevention covers the rearview camera and the screen that shows its image. Engine and engine cooling and equipment have 2 each. The gasoline fuel system, suspension, latches and locks, and exterior lighting each have 1.
Two examples stand out. A QX80 rearview camera software recall addressed the camera image, and an engine recall covering the QX50 and QX55 involved internal engine parts. The QX60 also had a lighting control module recall. No Infiniti recall in this period told owners not to drive or to park outside. Two recalls were remedied with over-the-air software updates sent to the vehicle wirelessly.
By model, the QX60 has the most recalls at 7, followed by the QX80 at 6, the QX50 at 4, the Q50 at 3, and the Q60 and QX55 at 2 each.
Complaint patterns
The engine is the largest complaint area at 54. Engine complaints commonly describe loss of power, knocking or unusual noises, oil consumption, and check engine lights. Unclassified or other issues account for 50, and the electrical system for 46. Electrical complaints often mention battery drain, screen glitches, or several warning lights coming on at once.
Forward collision avoidance has 36 complaints, typically about unexpected automatic braking or false collision alerts. The power train (21), service brakes (19), fuel and propulsion system (17) and structure (12) make up the rest of the list.
How an Infiniti Lemon Law Claim Works
Infiniti calls its dealers "retailers," and warranty repairs are done at authorized Infiniti retailers. Each visit for the same problem builds your record. A strong Infiniti claim usually comes down to three things: the right documents, the right timing and the right numbers.
The right documents
Ask for a repair order at the close of every visit. It should show the date in, the date out, the mileage, your complaint, and what the retailer did. If you hear "no problem found," make sure your complaint is still written on the order. Keep the receipt for any loaner or rental, and save any letters or emails you exchange with Infiniti. When a software update is the repair, ask that it be listed. In our experience, a software update can count as a repair attempt.
Evidence you gather yourself helps too. Short videos of a warning message, a frozen screen, or the camera image cutting out when you shift into reverse, with the date and mileage noted, can show a problem the technician could not reproduce.
The right timing
In our experience, the biggest mistake is waiting too long. The buyback offset is based on miles driven before your first repair visit for the problem, so reporting it early protects you. California's presumption looks at the first 18 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first: 4 or more repair attempts for the same problem, 2 or more for a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury, or more than 30 days out of service in total. Missing those numbers does not end your claim, since the presumption is a benchmark, not a requirement. See what the 30-day rule means.
The right numbers
In a repurchase, you get back what you paid, minus an offset equal to the miles you drove before the first repair visit for the defect, divided by 120,000, times the price paid. Try our California lemon law calculator, and read about the mileage offset. When a violation is willful, the court may add a civil penalty of up to two times actual damages. Some cases settle as a cash and keep instead, where you keep the vehicle and receive a payment.
In our experience, a recall repair visit can count as a repair attempt, and days waiting for recall parts count toward the 30 days. AB 1755 (2024) also created new procedures, starting in 2025, for manufacturers that elected into them; some manufacturers have elected into these procedures.

California Lemon Law for Infiniti Owners
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects Infiniti owners and lessees in California. If Infiniti or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
What you can recover
- Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
- Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
- Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
- Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).
What it costs

Infiniti Lemon Law FAQ
Does California lemon law cover my Infiniti QX60?
It can, if you bought or leased it new in California, or bought it certified or as a demo with a new-car warranty, and Infiniti could not fix a covered defect after a reasonable number of attempts. Ordinary used purchases without a new-car warranty generally no longer qualify.
Who pays my attorney fees in an Infiniti lemon law case?
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.
Can I get a buyback for an Infiniti with a recall?
Possibly. In our experience, a recall repair visit can count as a repair attempt, especially if you complained about the problem before the recall, and a recall with no available fix can support a buyback on its own.
Do I have to go through BBB AUTO LINE before suing Infiniti?
It depends on the claims and on the terms in your warranty booklet, which describes the BBB AUTO LINE program. Talk to a lawyer before you file with any dispute program so you understand how it affects your options.
My Infiniti is under the Nissan name on a recall. Does that matter?
No. Infiniti and Nissan share parts, so one recall campaign often covers both brands. What matters for your claim is that your Infiniti was included and how the repair went.
How long does an Infiniti lemon law case take?
In our experience, recall-related cases often resolve in about 1 to 3 months from the first call, and litigated cases take longer. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Infiniti Lemon Law — Your Rights
If your Infiniti vehicle has a persistent defect that Infiniti’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.
Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. Infiniti pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.
The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
