All Volkswagen Models We Cover

Browse every Volkswagen model in our database below. Each model page shows NHTSA complaint counts, active recalls, and lemon law eligibility information for every year we cover.

You bought a Volkswagen for the way it drives, not for the time you would spend in the service lounge. If your Atlas, ID.4, Tiguan or Taos keeps going back for the same electrical fault, warning light or software issue, you may have a lemon law claim.

California's Song-Beverly Act requires Volkswagen to buy back or replace a vehicle it cannot repair after a reasonable number of warranty attempts. That covers new and leased VWs and many certified pre-owned ones. A California lemon law attorney at our firm can review your repair history for free.

You do not need to prove why the car is failing. That is Volkswagen's job. What you need is a record showing that the problem is covered by the warranty, that you gave the dealer a fair chance to fix it, and that it is still not fixed. The rest of this page walks through what VW's warranty covers, what the federal data shows about VW problems, and how to build that record. Volkswagen Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law

Volkswagen of America describes a New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, that transfers to later owners for the rest of its term. VW's US warranty booklets also include corrosion perforation coverage of 7 years or 100,000 miles, for rust that goes all the way through the body sheet metal.

For the ID.4, VW lists a high-voltage battery limited warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles. It covers defects and capacity that falls below 70 percent. Powertrain and emissions terms can differ by model year and state, so check the warranty booklet for your exact vehicle on VW's owners literature site.

The lemon law focuses on defects that showed up and were reported during the warranty. If you first complained about an ID.4 charging fault at 45,000 miles, that history still counts after the 50,000-mile basic coverage ends.

Certified Pre-Owned Volkswagens

After the 2024 Rodriguez v. FCA US decision, an ordinary used car sold without a new-car warranty generally no longer qualifies. VW's Certified Pre-Owned program is different. For gas models bought on or after April 1, 2026, VW lists an extra 2 years or 24,000 miles of coverage after the new vehicle warranty ends, and certified electric models have carried 3 years or 36,000 miles. Our firm takes CPO, demo and dealer vehicles.

Common Volkswagen Problems in Recalls and Complaints

Since the 2021 model year, Volkswagen has issued 82 recalls and owners have filed 6,848 complaints, according to NHTSA recall and complaint data. Two recalls told owners not to drive the vehicle, and 3 told them to park outside. None were fixed by over-the-air update.

Two recall areas stand out. The electrical system had 14 recalls. Back over prevention, meaning rearview cameras and the screens that show them, had 11. When a camera system fails, owners usually describe a black or frozen image when shifting into reverse. Many of these are software recalls, like the recent Atlas software recall. Air bags followed with 8 recalls, then engine and cooling and structure with 5 each. Steering, hydraulic brakes and gasoline fuel systems had 4 each.

Complaints follow a similar line. Electrical system reports led with 1,266. Owners often describe dead 12-volt batteries, screens that reboot or go dark, failed key detection, and a cluster of warnings at once. Engine complaints came next at 834, usually about stalling, misfires, loss of power or coolant issues. Forward collision avoidance drew 697 complaints, mostly about sudden braking or warnings with no hazard ahead.

Service brakes (610), power train (356) and fuel or propulsion system (332) were also common. On the ID.4, propulsion complaints can cover the high-voltage battery, charging and the electric drive. Air bags drew 251 complaints.

These figures show what owners reported. They do not mean every VW has these problems, but they can help you put a name to what you are experiencing.

How a Volkswagen Lemon Law Claim Works

All Volkswagen warranty and recall work goes through authorized VW dealers. Each visit should produce a repair order, and you are entitled to a copy. Get it at pickup, not later by email. Read the complaint line before you leave. If it says "customer states noise" when you described a loss of power on the freeway, ask them to correct it.

Keep a simple record

  • Your purchase or lease contract and delivery date.
  • Every repair order, including "could not duplicate" visits.
  • Recall notices, and the dates you called to schedule them.
  • Photos of warning lights and short videos of the problem, with date and mileage.
  • Loaner or rental records, and notes on any days you had no car.

At drop-off, tell the service advisor exactly what you experience and when. "The screen went black and the car lost power at a stoplight, three times this month" gives the technician something to test. Ask for a loaner if the car will be down for more than a day, and note the dates either way.

Software updates are common on newer VWs, especially the ID.4, Atlas and Tiguan. In our experience, a software update meant to fix your complaint counts as a repair attempt, and we see the same update repeated several times without a lasting fix.

If it is there, a short letter is worth sending.

The legal test

The presumption applies within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery if the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for more than 30 days total. Meeting it is one way to prove a case, not the only one.

In our experience, the most costly mistake is waiting too long to take the car in. The mileage offset is measured from the first visit where you reported the problem, even if the dealer could not verify it that day, once the defect is later confirmed. See how the mileage offset is calculated.

If Volkswagen willfully fails to meet its obligations, a court can add a civil penalty of up to two times your actual damages, and the manufacturer pays attorney fees under Civil Code 1794(d). Many recall-related cases resolve in about 1 to 3 months from the first call, while litigated cases take longer. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Popular Volkswagen Models We Handle

Atlas

The three-row Atlas SUV is the most recalled VW since the 2021 model year, with 30 recalls. It also has 1,653 complaints.

Atlas Cross Sport

The two-row, sloped-roof version of the Atlas has 27 recalls and 660 complaints.

ID.4

VW's all-electric compact SUV has 26 recalls and the most complaints of any VW, at 1,822. Recent ID.4 campaigns have involved the traction battery.

Tiguan

The compact Tiguan SUV has 11 recalls and 1,064 complaints.

Taos

The subcompact Taos SUV has 8 recalls and 822 complaints.

Jetta, GTI and Golf R

The Jetta sedan has 6 recalls and 367 complaints. The GTI has 9 recalls and the Golf R has 7.

The Atlas family and the ID.4 account for most of the VW claims we review, which lines up with the recall and complaint data. Whatever you drive, the questions are the same: did the problem start under warranty, how many times has the dealer tried to fix it, and how many days has the car been out of service? If you are not sure whether your VW has open campaigns, check your VIN for recalls and bring the results when you call.

California Lemon Law for Volkswagen Owners

The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects Volkswagen owners and lessees in California. If Volkswagen or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).

A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).

What you can recover

  • Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
  • Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
  • Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
  • Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).

What it costs

You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

Volkswagen Lemon Law FAQ

Is my Volkswagen ID.4 battery problem covered?

The ID.4 high-voltage battery has its own 8-year or 100,000-mile warranty. Repeated battery or charging defects that VW cannot fix during that coverage may support a lemon law claim.

My VW rearview camera keeps going black. Is that a lemon law issue?

It can be. A backup camera is safety equipment, and if repeated repairs or software updates do not fix it, you may qualify.

Does a Certified Pre-Owned Volkswagen qualify?

Often it does, because VW CPO vehicles carry manufacturer warranty coverage. Ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally do not qualify after Rodriguez v. FCA US.

Who pays for my Volkswagen lemon law lawyer?

You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

What if VW tells me to park my car outside?

Follow the recall notice and keep a record of every day the warning affects your use of the car. Recall delays and parts waits can count toward the 30-day out-of-service total.

Volkswagen Lemon Law — Your Rights

If your Volkswagen vehicle has a persistent defect that Volkswagen’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.

Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. Volkswagen pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.

Did You Know?

The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
