A Porsche is supposed to be the car you never worry about. When a Taycan throws charging errors, a Cayenne keeps losing electrical functions, or a 911 sits at the Porsche Center for weeks waiting on parts, that expectation falls apart quickly. This page is for California owners and lessees of new and certified Porsche vehicles who are dealing with a defect that will not stay fixed.
California's Song-Beverly Act does not care about the badge. If Porsche cannot repair a warranty defect within a reasonable number of attempts, you may qualify for a repurchase, a replacement, or a cash settlement. Because Porsche prices are high, the restitution in a repurchase can be significant, and Porsche pays your attorney fees if you win.
Porsche Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law
Porsche Cars North America's U.S. warranty page lists a single New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, for vehicles purchased and registered in the U.S. Porsche does not split this into separate "bumper-to-bumper" and "powertrain" terms the way many brands do.
One detail matters for demo cars. Porsche states that coverage begins on the date the car is first delivered to a retail buyer or first used as a demonstrator, lease or company car, whichever is earlier. If you bought a former demo, part of the 4-year term may already have run before you took delivery.
Other coverage Porsche lists in the U.S.:
- High-voltage battery (Taycan, Macan Electric and other electrified models): 8 years or 100,000 miles for defects, according to Porsche's U.S. vehicle listings, with at least 80% of original net capacity for 3 years or 37,000 miles and at least 70% until the battery warranty ends. Hybrid terms can differ, so check your warranty manual.
- Corrosion perforation: 12 years.
- Genuine parts and accessories: 2 years, unlimited miles, when bought and installed at an authorized Porsche Center.
- Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned: a 2-year, unlimited-mile limited warranty that begins when the new vehicle warranty expires.
Since Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024), ordinary used cars sold without the new-car warranty generally no longer qualify. Porsche Approved CPO cars, demos and dealer-owned cars sold with remaining factory warranty are another matter, and our firm takes those cases. Either way, the defect needs to be reported to a Porsche Center while coverage is active.

Common Porsche Problems in Recalls and Complaints
Porsche has issued 53 recalls since the 2021 model year, and owners have filed 506 complaints, according to NHTSA recall and complaint data. The numbers are concentrated in a few places, and the Taycan is at the center of most of them.
The electrical system is the most common recall component, with 11 recalls. Suspension follows with 8, exterior lighting with 6, air bags with 5, and seat belts and backover prevention (the rearview camera) with 4 each. Engine and hydraulic service brake recalls account for 2 each.
Three Porsche recalls since the 2021 model year carried a do-not-drive warning, meaning owners were told not to drive the car until it was repaired. None carried a park-outside warning, and none of the recalls in the data was fixed by an over-the-air update. Every Porsche recall repair therefore involved a visit to a Porsche Center, and each of those visits creates a repair record.
What these systems do when they fail
In modern Porsches, especially electrified ones, the electrical system covers far more than lights and switches. It includes high-voltage battery components, control modules and wiring that manage driving functions. Owners with electrical problems commonly describe warning messages, loss of drive power, charging that will not start or stops early, and screens or modules that reset.
Suspension recalls involve parts like struts and control arms. When a suspension part fails, drivers may notice knocking, pulling to one side, uneven ride height or a change in handling. A recent example is a recall involving the MacPherson strut on certain Panamera and Taycan models. Exterior lighting recalls can involve headlights or turn signals that fail or do not meet federal requirements.
Complaint patterns
Electrical system complaints lead by a wide margin at 123. After that come forward collision avoidance at 53, engine and "unknown or other" at 49 each, power train at 46, service brakes at 35, fuel and propulsion at 29 and backover prevention at 20. Forward collision complaints usually involve automatic braking or warnings that activate without a real hazard, or a driver assistance system that shuts off with an error.
How a Porsche Lemon Law Claim Works
Porsche warranty service is done at authorized Porsche Centers, the brand's franchised dealers. Southern California has several, and any of them can perform warranty work regardless of where you bought the car. If you live near Westwood or anywhere in the region, our Los Angeles lemon law attorney page explains how we work with local owners.
Records that make the case
The repair order from each visit is the most important document you will have. Before you sign or drive off, check that it lists your complaint in plain terms, the date the car was dropped off, the mileage and what the technician did. Ask the service advisor for a copy each time. Porsche Centers often give loaner cars, which is helpful, but it also means owners stop paying attention to how long the car is actually gone. Write down drop-off and pick-up dates yourself.
Photos and short videos help. A clip of a warning message on the dash, with the odometer visible, can show a problem that a technician could not reproduce on the day you came in.
Waiting on parts
Specialized Porsche parts are not always on the shelf. In our experience, days the car sits at the dealer waiting for recall or repair parts count toward the 30-day out-of-service measure. A recall that has no available fix yet can, in our view, support a buyback on its own when it leaves you with a car you cannot safely use.
The legal standard
California presumes the manufacturer has had a reasonable number of attempts if, within 18 months of delivery or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first, the same defect has been subject to repair 4 or more times, a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury has been subject to repair 2 or more times, or the car has been out of service more than 30 cumulative days. Our page on the 30-day rule explains that prong in more detail. The presumption is one way to prove a case, not the only one.
Review your Warranty and Customer Information booklet and follow its instructions if it includes one.
When Porsche willfully fails to meet its obligations, the law allows a civil penalty of up to two times your actual damages, in addition to restitution. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

California Lemon Law for Porsche Owners
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects Porsche owners and lessees in California. If Porsche or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
What you can recover
- Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
- Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
- Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
- Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).
What it costs
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

Porsche Lemon Law FAQ
Is a Porsche covered by California lemon law the same way as an economy car?
Yes. The Song-Beverly Act applies to any new motor vehicle sold or leased in California with a manufacturer warranty, regardless of price. A higher price usually means a larger restitution amount in a repurchase.
I bought a Porsche that was a dealer demo. Does it qualify?
It can. Demo cars sold with the remaining factory warranty are treated like new vehicles, and our firm takes those cases. Keep in mind that Porsche's warranty may have started when the car was first used as a demo.
My Taycan has spent weeks at the Porsche Center waiting for parts. Does that time count?
In our experience, days spent waiting for parts count toward the 30 cumulative days out of service. Keep your own list of drop-off and pick-up dates to compare with the repair orders.
Does a Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned car qualify?
It can, if the defect is reported while the new vehicle warranty or the Porsche Approved warranty is in effect. Ordinary used cars without a manufacturer warranty generally no longer qualify after Rodriguez v. FCA US.
Porsche issued a do-not-drive recall on my car. What should I do?
Follow the recall instructions and contact a Porsche Center right away. Then call a lemon law attorney, since in our view a recall without an available fix can support a buyback on its own.
Who pays the attorney fees in a Porsche lemon law case?
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

Porsche Lemon Law — Your Rights
If your Porsche vehicle has a persistent defect that Porsche’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.
Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. Porsche pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.
The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
