• Corrosion perforation: 72 months, regardless of mileage.

Air bags and the electrical system tie as the most frequent recall areas, with 5 recalls each. Air bag recalls can involve sensors, inflators or wiring that affect whether the bag deploys correctly. Electrical recalls often cover modules, displays or wiring that control warning lights and other functions. Power train and back over prevention follow with 3 recalls each. Back over prevention refers to the rearview camera system; a typical symptom is a blank, frozen or delayed camera image when you shift into reverse. Fuel system, equipment, engine cooling and seat issues round out the list with 2 recalls each. One recent example is an automatic transmission recall affecting the LX and LS Hybrid.

California presumes a vehicle is a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles, the same defect was repaired 4 or more times, a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the car was out of service more than 30 days total. The presumption is one way to prove a case, not the only way. If the manufacturer willfully fails to comply, a court can add a civil penalty of up to two times your actual damages.
