You bought a Range Rover, Defender or Discovery expecting a capable, refined SUV. Instead, you may be dealing with warning messages, electrical faults or a vehicle that spends more time at the retailer than in your driveway. If that sounds familiar and you live in California, this page explains your rights.
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act requires a manufacturer to repurchase or replace a vehicle it cannot fix after a reasonable number of attempts. For Land Rover owners, a buyback can mean a refund of the price paid (minus a mileage offset), payoff of the loan, and recovery of fees and taxes. If you lease, it can end the lease. A Los Angeles lemon law attorney at our firm can review your repair orders at no cost.
Land Rover Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law
Land Rover USA states on its official warranty page that every new Land Rover is covered by a New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The same page lists a 6-year, unlimited-mileage corrosion perforation warranty, along with emissions warranties and Land Rover Roadside Assistance while the vehicle is under warranty.
For plug-in hybrid models, Land Rover USA states that the traction battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage for earlier plug-in hybrid model years may differ, so check your warranty booklet.
Land Rover does not publish a separate powertrain term on that page the way some brands do. The engine and transmission fall under the new vehicle warranty, and your booklet lists any part-specific coverage. Land Rover also runs an Approved Certified Pre-Owned program that adds limited warranty coverage after the new vehicle warranty ends. Plan lengths vary, so read the certified paperwork from your purchase.
Why the warranty dates matter
Lemon law turns on defects that were reported while the vehicle was under warranty. A Range Rover Sport that went in for an electrical fault at 3 years old can still support a claim at 5 years old. After Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024), ordinary used vehicles without the new-car warranty generally no longer qualify. Approved Certified Pre-Owned, demo and dealer vehicles can, and our firm takes those cases.

Common Land Rover Problems in Recalls and Complaints
Since the 2021 model year, Land Rover has issued 49 recalls, according to NHTSA recall and complaint data. Owners also filed 715 complaints with NHTSA. No Land Rover recall in that period carried a do-not-drive or park-outside warning. One recall was fixed with an over-the-air software update.
Recall areas
Two areas tie for the most recalls, at 7 each:
- Electrical system. These recalls cover parts that manage power through the vehicle. Two recent campaigns involve the DC/DC converter, the part that steps down high-voltage power for the 12-volt system. You can read one of them here: Land Rover DC/DC converter recall. When this kind of part fails, owners may see battery warnings, a loss of electrical features or a no-start condition.
- Back over prevention. This is the rearview camera system. Typical symptoms are a blank or distorted image when reversing.
Seat belts follow with 6 recalls. Exterior lighting, engine and engine cooling, and structure each have 4. Air bags and power train each have 3.
Complaint areas
Electrical complaints far outnumber the rest, at 191. Owners commonly describe dead batteries, screens that freeze or reboot, warning messages that come and go, and features that stop responding. Engine complaints are next at 78. Visibility and wipers draw 60, which can include wiper, washer and windshield issues. The list continues with "unknown or other" (58), power train (49), exterior lighting (46), steering (38) and service brakes (29).
Electrical faults are often intermittent, which makes them hard to reproduce at the retailer. That is why records you make yourself are so useful. A recall or complaint count does not mean your SUV is defective, but it can show that a symptom you are seeing has been reported by other owners too.
How a Land Rover Lemon Law Claim Works
Land Rover sells and services vehicles through authorized retailers. Warranty work happens there, and each visit should produce a repair order. That document is the record of your complaint, the work performed and how long the vehicle was in the shop. Ask for a copy every time, even for a quick software reflash or a "no fault found" visit.
Making your records count
- When a warning appears, pull over safely and take a photo of the message and the odometer.
- Record short videos of intermittent faults, such as a screen reboot or a camera that drops out.
- Describe the problem the same way at each visit, so repair orders show the same nonconformity.
- Read the repair order at pickup and ask the advisor to correct anything wrong.
- Track days without your vehicle, including days waiting for parts.
In our experience, days spent waiting at the retailer for recall parts count toward the 30-day out-of-service presumption. With long parts delays, those days can add up quickly. Our page on the 30-day rule explains how this works.
Software updates and repeat visits
Many modern Land Rover repairs are software updates rather than part replacements. In our experience, a software update can count as a repair attempt, and the same update is sometimes repeated 5 or 6 times without fixing the problem. If the retailer tells you the fix is "a new software level," make sure that work appears on the repair order with the date and mileage. If the problem returns, go back and report it again rather than waiting to see if it settles down.
What the law requires
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles, the same defect was repaired 4 or more times, a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service more than 30 days in total. The presumption helps, but it is not the only way to win. The manufacturer pays attorney fees under Civil Code 1794(d), and a willful violation can add a civil penalty of up to two times actual damages.
In our experience, a recall with no available fix can support a buyback on its own, and owners should call an attorney as soon as a recall notice arrives. Most recall-related cases resolve in about 1 to 3 months from the first call. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
Popular Land Rover Models We Handle
These figures are since the 2021 model year, according to NHTSA recall and complaint data. Many recalls cover several models at once, so counts overlap.
Defender
The Defender is Land Rover's off-road focused SUV, sold in two-door and four-door body styles. It draws the most complaints of any Land Rover model, with 329, and has 18 recalls.
Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport is a performance-oriented luxury SUV. It has the most recalls in the lineup at 23, plus 128 complaints.
Range Rover
The full-size Range Rover is the brand's flagship. It has 20 recalls and 86 complaints. The Range Rover plug-in hybrid appears separately in the data with 3 recalls.
Discovery and Discovery Sport
The Discovery is a three-row family SUV, and the Discovery Sport is a smaller compact model. The Discovery has 9 recalls and 60 complaints; the Discovery Sport has 7 recalls.
Range Rover Velar and Evoque
The Velar is a midsize two-row SUV, and the Evoque is the brand's compact. The Velar has 9 recalls and 47 complaints. The Evoque has 7 recalls and 32 complaints.
California Lemon Law for Land Rover Owners
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects Land Rover owners and lessees in California. If Land Rover or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
What you can recover
- Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
- Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
- Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
- Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).
What it costs
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

Land Rover Lemon Law FAQ
My Range Rover keeps showing electrical warnings that disappear. Can that be a lemon?
Yes, intermittent faults can qualify if they are covered by the warranty and keep coming back after repair attempts. Photos and videos with the date and mileage help prove the problem when the retailer cannot reproduce it.
My Defender has been at the retailer for weeks waiting for parts. Do those days count?
In our experience, they do. Days out of service waiting for parts, including recall parts, can count toward the 30-day presumption.
How long is the Land Rover new vehicle warranty?
Land Rover USA lists 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, plus 6 years with unlimited mileage for corrosion perforation. Check your warranty booklet for terms specific to your model year.
Can an Approved Certified Pre-Owned Land Rover qualify for a buyback?
It can, if the defects were reported during the warranty coverage that came with the vehicle. Ordinary used vehicles without the new-car warranty generally no longer qualify.
Is my leased Range Rover covered by California lemon law?
Yes, leased vehicles are covered. A successful claim typically refunds what you paid and ends the lease.
Will hiring a lemon law lawyer for my Land Rover cost me anything?
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

Land Rover Lemon Law — Your Rights
If your Land Rover vehicle has a persistent defect that Land Rover’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.
Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. Land Rover pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.
The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
