Manufacturers reported 8 recalls on 2021 and newer cars, SUVs and pickups to NHTSA between March 20, 2023 and March 26, 2023, covering 49,050 vehicles. The most serious: 2021-2022 Jeep Wrangler Frame Recall (23V191).

Which cars were recalled the week of March 20, 2023?

  • 2021-2022 Jeep Wrangler Frame Recall (23V191)
    March 23, 2023 · 35,829 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2021-2022 Jeep Wrangler

A stud on the frame assembly may puncture the fuel tank in a crash, which can result in a fuel leak.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, remove the frame stud and apply paint, free of charge.

  • 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 1500 Instrument Cluster Recall (23V204)
    March 24, 2023 · 6,857 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 1500; 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500; 2021-2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500

The instrument cluster may fail to display any information when the vehicle is started.

Risk: A blank instrument panel will not show critical information, such as vehicle speed, fuel gauge, warning messages, and warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the instrument cluster software on the affected vehicles, free of charge.

  • 2022-2023 Audi Q4 E-Tron Air Bag Recall (23V189)
    March 22, 2023 · 5,224 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2022-2023 Audi Q4 E-Tron

During deployment, the head curtain air bag could deform the door seal and expose the metal inlay within the seal, which could tear the air bag.

Risk: In the event of a crash, a torn air bag cannot protect occupants as intended, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will install cloth tape in the driver and front passenger B-pillar area, free of charge.

  • 2021-2022 Ford Explorer Parking Brake Electrical Recall (23V199) Repeat recall
    March 24, 2023 · 674 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2021-2022 Ford Explorer

3L RWD, 3.3L GAS, 3.3L FHEV, or 3.0L ST powertrain.

Risk: Without the electronic parking brake applied, the vehicle could rollaway if the driveshaft disconnects. A disconnected driveshaft can also result in a loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the PCM software, free of charge.

  • 2023 Volvo S60 Electrical Recall (23V188)
    March 22, 2023 · 393 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2023 Volvo C40BEV; 2023 Volvo S60; 2023 Volvo V60CC; 2023 Volvo XC40; 2023 Volvo XC60; 2023 Volvo XC90

A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) may be falsely detected for the emergency call system (e-call) and display "e-Call Service Required" in the driver information module (DIM).

Risk: The false warning message could prevent the detection of an actual e-call system failure, which could delay an emergency response during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will update the telematics and connectivity antenna module (TCAM) software, free of charge.

  • 2023 Infiniti QX55 Door Lock Recall (23V187)
    March 20, 2023 · 48 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2022 Infiniti QX50; 2023 Infiniti QX55

The incorrect door latch may have been installed in the front right-side passenger door lock assembly, preventing the front right-side door lock from automatically locking.

Risk: An unlocked door may unlatch and open during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the front right-side passenger door lock assembly, free of charge.

  • 2023 Ford Edge Vehicle Tether Anchor Recall (23V198)
    March 24, 2023 · 19 vehicles

Vehicles: 2023 Ford Edge; 2023 Lincoln Nautilus

The child seat tether wire welds on the second-row left-side seat back frame may be insufficient, which can reduce the seat's ability to properly restrain a child during a crash.

Risk: A child that is not properly restrained during a crash can have an increased risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will replace the left-side second-row seat back frame, free of charge.

  • 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 580 Frame Recall (23V200)
    March 24, 2023 · 6 vehicles

    Vehicles: 2021 Mercedes-Benz S 580

The bulkhead that separates the engine compartment from the passenger compartment may not have been properly sealed, causing water to drain into the passenger compartment.

Risk: Disabled safety features, including seat belt tightening and seat adjustments, can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will repair the bulkhead front wall sealing, free of charge.

Are owners saying these recalls fixed the problem?

For each recall this week, the number of NHTSA owner complaints about the same part on the same vehicles filed since the recall date, and how many describe the problem happening more than once or coming back after a repair attempt. Complaints are unverified owner reports; automated text matching can miss or misread some.

Can a recall or defect investigation make my car a lemon in California?

Not by itself. What matters is whether a covered defect keeps coming back or keeps your vehicle at the dealer, and a federal investigation or recall is strong evidence that the problem is real.

Under California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, a manufacturer that cannot fix a warranty defect that substantially impairs a vehicle’s use, value or safety within a reasonable number of attempts may have to repurchase or replace it (Civ. Code 1793.2(d)). Within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles, the law presumes a reasonable number of attempts after two repairs of a defect likely to cause death or serious injury, four repairs of the same defect, or more than 30 days out of service (Civ. Code 1793.22(b)).

An owner who prevails can recover reasonable attorney fees and costs from the manufacturer (Civ. Code 1794(d)). You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

In our cases, a recall repair visit counts as a repair attempt, and it's strongest when the owner complained about the problem before the recall came out. A recall shows the defect is real and that enough owners reported it for the manufacturer to issue a fix.

The biggest mistake I see is waiting too long. The mileage offset starts at your first repair visit for the problem, so the sooner you take it in, the better. If the problem comes and goes, take it in when it happens. You can't go back to that date later.

If you get a recall notice, call a lemon law attorney right away. You may have taken the car in for the same problem before and forgotten, or there may be other recalls related to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the recall fixing my car mean I have no case?

Not necessarily. Even if the recall repair fixed it, you may still have a case, and a car that's a year or more old can still qualify.

Do used cars qualify for California lemon law?

We take certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles. Since the California Supreme Court's Rodriguez decision in 2024, ordinary used cars generally do not qualify.

How long does a recall lemon law case take?

Recall-related cases typically resolve in one to three months from your first call. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

What does a lemon law attorney cost?

You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.
