• High-voltage battery (electric MINI models): 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, against defects in materials or workmanship.
• Rust perforation: 12 years, unlimited miles.
• Complimentary Scheduled MINI Maintenance: scheduled maintenance for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Older model years may differ, so check the booklet for your car.

For a lemon law claim, what you need is a defect that showed up and was reported to an authorized MINI dealer during the warranty. If your Cooper SE's battery or charging system acts up at 70,000 miles, the 8-year/100,000-mile battery coverage may still apply even though the basic warranty has ended.

MINI also sells Certified Pre-Owned vehicles with extended coverage; the terms are in your CPO documents. Since the California Supreme Court's 2024 ruling in Rodriguez v. Common MINI Problems in Recalls and Complaints

According to NHTSA recall and complaint data, MINI has 12 recalls and 119 complaints since the 2021 model year. None carried a do-not-drive or park-outside warning.

The electrical system and seat belts are the most frequent recall areas, with 3 recalls each. Hydraulic service brakes and structure have 2 each, and air bags and electronic stability control have 1 each. Two of the electrical recalls involve the electric Cooper SE, including an April 2024 recall involving its traction battery.

Complaints lean toward the same systems. Electrical leads with 22, service brakes have 16, and forward collision avoidance has 10. Vehicle speed control, engine, fuel and propulsion, and electronic stability control each have 5.

Here is what those categories usually mean in daily driving:

• Electrical: warning lights, battery drain, display or key problems, or on an electric MINI, charging faults.
• Service brakes: noise, a soft or hard pedal, or a brake system warning.

California Lemon Law for MINI Owners

The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects MINI owners and lessees in California. If MINI or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).

A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
