GMC owners tend to rely on their vehicles for real work: towing a trailer, hauling a crew, or carrying a family across the state. So when a Sierra loses power on the freeway, a Yukon's screen goes black, or a Canyon has to be dropped off for the third time with the same noise, the cost goes beyond inconvenience. This page explains what California law offers when a GMC truck, SUV or van will not stay fixed.
Under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, if GM cannot repair a warranty defect in your GMC after a reasonable number of attempts, it must either replace the vehicle or refund your money. The law covers GMC vehicles bought or leased new in California, as well as certified pre-owned and demo vehicles sold with a new-car warranty. If you are not sure whether your situation fits, a California lemon law attorney can look at your paperwork at no cost.
GMC Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law
GMC's 2026 limited warranty booklet sets out the coverage most owners start with. The whole vehicle is covered bumper to bumper for 3 years or 36,000 miles, and powertrain components are covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first in each case. GMC also lists rust-through corrosion coverage of 6 years or 100,000 miles.
Electric models carry an extra layer. GMC's electric vehicle warranty booklets for the Hummer EV and Sierra EV cover certain electric propulsion components, such as the high-voltage battery, drive motor and related electronics, for 8 years or 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. Exact parts lists can vary, so look at the EV booklet for your model year.
Bought a used GMC with a certified badge? GM's Certified Pre-Owned program, which covers Chevrolet, Buick and GMC, describes a 6-year or 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty in addition to any factory coverage that remains.
The warranty is the foundation of any lemon law claim. If a covered defect appears during the warranty period and GMC's dealers cannot fix it, the clock on your rights has already started. The warranty also matters for used buyers: after Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC (2024), a used GMC sold with only the remainder of the original warranty generally does not qualify as a "new motor vehicle," while a CPO vehicle with its own warranty may still qualify. Check your warranty booklet for exact terms.

Common GMC Problems in Recalls and Complaints
Since the 2021 model year, GMC has issued 78 recalls, and owners have submitted 7,856 complaints, according to NHTSA recall and complaint data. Because GMC trucks and SUVs share platforms with Chevrolet, many of these recalls cover both brands at once.
Recall patterns
Recalls are spread fairly evenly across several systems. Tires and power train tie for the most frequent, with 8 recalls each. Seat belts, gasoline fuel system parts and electrical systems each account for 7. Exterior lighting shows up in 6 recalls, air bags in 5 and seats in 4.
A few recent campaigns illustrate the range. One involves a fuel system control module on the Sierra 3500. Another covers the traction battery on the Hummer EV Pickup and Sierra EV. A third addresses tire sidewalls on the Savana van.
The data shows 1 GMC recall with a do-not-drive warning and 2 with park-outside warnings. Meanwhile, 7 recalls could be addressed with an over-the-air software update.
Complaint patterns
Engine complaints stand out. They total 2,377, close to a third of all GMC complaints in the data. Owners describe rough running, misfires, knocking, sudden loss of power and engines that shut off while driving. Power train complaints, at 1,006, center on transmissions that hesitate, slip, clunk or shift hard, along with four-wheel-drive and transfer case issues.
Electrical system complaints number 810, covering everything from batteries that drain overnight to displays and cameras that fail. There are 526 complaints in unclassified or other issues, 418 involving the fuel and propulsion system, 366 about service brakes and 324 about forward collision avoidance, where owners often report unexpected braking or false alerts. Structure complaints, which can involve tailgates, frames, doors and body panels, total 314.
None of these numbers prove that a particular GMC is defective. What they do show is where to look. If your symptoms match one of these patterns and the dealer has already tried to fix them, your repair orders deserve a closer look.
How a GMC Lemon Law Claim Works
Where your repairs happen
Warranty work on a GMC is handled by authorized GMC dealers, many of which also sell Buick. Each trip to an authorized dealer for the same defect builds your repair history. If one dealer keeps telling you nothing is wrong, you can take the vehicle to a different GMC dealer.
What your repair orders should say
Repair orders are the main evidence in a lemon law case. Before you leave, read the order and make sure it describes your complaint in your own words, lists the mileage and dates, and explains what the technician did. "Check engine light, loss of power while towing uphill" is far more useful than "customer states concern." Ask for a copy every time, including visits where no repair was made.
Documenting a GMC
- Photograph or film warning messages on the driver information center and the infotainment screen.
- If the problem happens while towing, note the trailer weight, the road and the conditions.
- Save records of dealer software reflashes and over-the-air updates. In our experience, repeated software updates can count as repair attempts.
- Keep a simple log of dates the truck could not be driven or sat at the dealer. Days waiting for parts count toward the 30 days.
What the law provides
The presumption in Civil Code section 1793.22(b) applies within 18 months or 18,000 miles: 2 or more repairs for a defect likely to cause death or serious injury, 4 or more repairs for the same problem, or more than 30 total days out of service. Your GMC can still qualify outside that window. A successful claim can lead to a buyback, a replacement or, in some cases, a cash and keep settlement. If GM willfully failed to meet its obligations, a court can add a civil penalty of up to twice your actual damages. Some manufacturers have elected into new procedures under AB 1755; see what changed with AB 1755 in 2025.
Many GMC trucks are registered to businesses. A business-registered vehicle can qualify if its GVWR is under 10,000 pounds and the business has no more than five vehicles registered in California.
Popular GMC Models We Handle
GMC Sierra 1500
The half-ton Sierra 1500 leads GMC in NHTSA complaints since the 2021 model year with 3,155, and it appears in 14 recalls.
GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
These full-size SUVs are the most-recalled GMC models, with 22 recalls for the Yukon and 19 for the Yukon XL. Owners have filed 1,403 complaints on the Yukon and 1,086 on the Yukon XL. Some, like a transfer case recall, also cover the Sierra 1500.
GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD
The heavy-duty Sierra pickups appear in 10 and 9 recalls. They are built for towing and payload, so drivetrain and fuel system problems can take them out of service quickly.
GMC Canyon
The midsize Canyon pickup appears in 10 recalls and has 461 complaints.
GMC Acadia and Terrain
The Acadia, a three-row crossover, appears in 10 recalls and has 597 complaints. The compact Terrain has 399 complaints.

California Lemon Law for GMC Owners
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects GMC owners and lessees in California. If GMC or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
What you can recover
- Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
- Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
- Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
- Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).
What it costs

GMC Lemon Law FAQ
Is my GMC Sierra HD covered by lemon law if I use it for work?
Personal vehicles used partly for work can qualify. A vehicle registered to a business can qualify if its GVWR is under 10,000 pounds and the business has no more than five vehicles registered in California, so check the GVWR on your door sticker.
What does a GMC lemon law case cost me?
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.
Does a battery or charging problem on my Hummer EV or Sierra EV qualify?
It can. GMC's EV booklets cover certain electric propulsion parts for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and repeated unsuccessful repairs of a covered defect can support a claim.
My Yukon has an open recall. Should I call a lawyer now?
Yes. In our experience, calling an attorney as soon as you get a recall notice is the safest move, and a recall repair visit can count as a repair attempt, especially if you complained about the problem before the recall.
How quickly can a GMC buyback happen?
In our experience, recall-related cases often resolve in about 1 to 3 months from the first call, and cases that go to litigation take longer. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

GMC Lemon Law — Your Rights
If your GMC vehicle has a persistent defect that GMC’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.
Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. GMC pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.
The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
