If your Acura keeps going back to the dealer for the same problem, this page is for you. Maybe the steering on your RDX feels heavy one morning and normal the next. Maybe the screen in your ZDX goes dark on the freeway, or a warning light on your MDX returns a week after every repair. California law gives you real options when a manufacturer cannot fix a new vehicle within a reasonable number of tries.
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Civil Code sections 1790 to 1795.8) can require American Honda, the company behind Acura's warranty in the United States, to buy back or replace a defective Acura. It covers new vehicles bought or leased in California, and we also take certified pre-owned, demo and dealer-owned vehicles sold with a new-car warranty. After the California Supreme Court's 2024 decision in Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC, ordinary used cars sold with only the rest of the original warranty generally no longer count as "new motor vehicles." Leasing? You are covered too. See does California lemon law cover leased vehicles.
Acura Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law
Acura's 2026 warranty booklet, posted on Acura's owner site, lists these coverages for a new Acura:
- New Vehicle Limited Warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, including the 12-volt battery.
- Powertrain Limited Warranty: 6 years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first.
- Rust Perforation Limited Warranty: 5 years with no mileage limit.
- Seat belts: 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, if they fail to function properly.
The ZDX is a battery electric SUV, so its high-voltage battery has its own coverage terms. Check the warranty booklet that came with your ZDX for the exact battery terms. Acura Precision Certified pre-owned vehicles also carry added coverage, but the details depend on the program year, so read the certification paperwork from your purchase.
Why does the warranty matter so much? A lemon law claim runs through it. The Song-Beverly Act protects you when a defect covered by the express warranty is not fixed after a reasonable number of attempts. A repair visit made while your Acura is under warranty is evidence. A visit after coverage ends, or a repair you paid for out of pocket without ever reporting the problem before, is much harder to use. Report problems early, while coverage is in place.
There is one more section worth reading. Recent Acura warranty booklets include an arbitration provision that lets either you or American Honda choose binding arbitration instead of court, and they let you opt out by letter within 30 days after delivery. The booklet also describes the NCDS dispute program and states that Acura does not require you to use it before going to court. Talk to a lawyer before you sign anything or file with any program.

Common Acura Problems in Recalls and Complaints
According to NHTSA recall and complaint data, Acura has issued 19 recalls since the 2021 model year, and owners have filed 1,603 complaints with NHTSA about vehicles from those model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a finding that a defect exists. Still, complaint patterns show where drivers are running into trouble.
What the recalls involve
Three systems tie as the most frequent recall components, with 3 recalls each: hydraulic service brakes, steering, and the electrical system. Seats and air bags follow with 2 recalls each, and the powertrain, tires and gasoline fuel system have 1 each. Examples include an RDX electric power steering recall, a brake pedal and linkage recall on the TLX and MDX, and a ZDX instrument cluster recall.
None of Acura's recalls in this period told owners not to drive or to park outside. One recall was remedied with an over-the-air software update, meaning the fix was sent to the vehicle wirelessly instead of being installed at the dealer.
What owners report to NHTSA
Steering leads the complaint list with 315 complaints. Owners in this category commonly describe steering that feels heavy or stiff, a wheel that is hard to turn at low speed, or lane-keeping features that tug the wheel when they should not. The power train is next with 219 complaints, often about shifting, hesitation or rough engagement. Another 169 complaints fall into unclassified or other issues.
The electrical system (161), the engine (134) and service brakes (120) come next, along with forward collision avoidance (118) and lane departure (55). Those last two are driver-assist functions. Owners in these categories often describe sudden braking with nothing ahead, collision warnings that come on for no clear reason, or lane alerts that switch themselves off. If your Acura does any of this, write down the date, mileage and conditions every time it happens.
How an Acura Lemon Law Claim Works
Every Acura warranty repair goes through an authorized Acura dealer. That dealer visit is where your paper trail starts, and the paper trail is what a lemon law claim is built on. Here is how to make each visit count.
- Describe the problem clearly. Tell the service advisor what happens, when and how often. "Steering goes heavy for a few seconds after a cold start" is far more useful than "steering issue."
- Get a repair order every time. Even if the dealer could not reproduce the problem, ask for a closed repair order that shows your complaint, the mileage in and out, the dates, and what the technician did. Read it before you leave and ask for corrections if your complaint is missing.
- Keep software update records. Many fixes are software reflashes. In our experience, a software update can count as a repair attempt, and we have seen the same update repeated 5 or 6 times without a fix.
- Record the problem. Have a passenger film warning messages on the instrument cluster or a frozen center display, with the date and mileage noted for each clip.
- Do not wait. In our experience, the biggest mistake is waiting too long to take the car in. Intermittent problems get harder to prove over time, and the buyback offset is measured from the first visit where you reported the problem.
Check your booklet, and keep a copy of anything you send to Acura Client Relations.
The California presumption
California presumes your Acura is a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the car spent more than 30 total days out of service for repairs. The presumption is a helpful benchmark, not a requirement. Learn more about the 30-day rule.
Recalls fit into this. In our experience, a recall repair visit can count as a repair attempt, especially if you complained about the problem before the recall, and days spent waiting for recall parts count toward the 30 days. You can check your VIN for open recalls at any time.
What a buyback pays
In a repurchase, the manufacturer refunds what you paid, less a deduction for use: the miles you drove before first bringing the car in for the problem, divided by 120,000, times the price paid. Our California lemon law calculator gives you a rough estimate. If the violation was willful, a court can add a civil penalty of up to two times your actual damages.
AB 1755, effective in 2025, created new pre-suit and court procedures that apply when a manufacturer elects into them, and some manufacturers have elected into these procedures. Read what changed with AB 1755 in 2025.

California Lemon Law for Acura Owners
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects Acura owners and lessees in California. If Acura or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
What you can recover
- Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
- Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
- Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
- Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).
What it costs
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.

Acura Lemon Law FAQ
Does California lemon law cover my Acura MDX?
Yes, if you bought or leased it new in California, or bought it certified pre-owned or as a demo with a new-car warranty, and a covered defect has not been fixed after a reasonable number of attempts. Ordinary used purchases without a new-car warranty generally no longer qualify after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
Who pays my attorney fees in an Acura lemon law case?
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs. California's lemon law requires the manufacturer to pay reasonable attorney fees when the buyer prevails.
Can I get a buyback for an Acura with a recall?
Possibly. In our experience, a recall repair visit can count as a repair attempt, and a recall with no available fix can support a buyback on its own. Call an attorney as soon as you get the recall notice.
Does the arbitration clause in my Acura warranty stop a lemon law claim?
No. Arbitration changes where a dispute is heard, not whether the Song-Beverly Act applies, and recent booklets allow you to opt out within 30 days after delivery. Have a lawyer read your booklet and purchase paperwork before you decide anything.
My ZDX keeps getting software updates for the same problem. Does that count?
In our experience, a software update can count as a repair attempt when it is meant to fix a problem you reported. Keep the repair order for every dealer update and save any notices about over-the-air updates.
How long does an Acura lemon law case take?
In our experience, recall-related cases often resolve in about 1 to 3 months from the first call, while cases that go into litigation take longer. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Acura Lemon Law — Your Rights
If your Acura vehicle has a persistent defect that Acura’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.
Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. Acura pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.
The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
