Which has more lemon law problems in California, Lexus or Acura?
Short answer: Neither brand gets special treatment: California's lemon law covers new and leased Lexus and Acura vehicles the same way, and the manufacturer pays your attorney fees when you win. California owners of 2019 to 2027 models filed 209 Lexus and 221 Acura complaints with NHTSA (2021 to 2026), but raw counts mostly reflect how many of each are on the road. Lexus complaints center on the airbags, then the brakes; Acura complaints on the engine, then the steering. What decides a claim is your own repair history.

What California Lexus Owners Report to NHTSA
California owners of 2019 to 2027 Lexus models filed 209 complaints with NHTSA between 2021 and 2026. The single biggest problem area was the airbags, named in 51 complaints, which is about one in four. Brakes came next with 25, then the electrical system with 19, and the engine and the lights, cameras and visibility category with 15 each.
The Lexus RX drew the most complaints by far, 76, which is more than a third of the brand total. The Lexus ES (34) and Lexus NX (33) were close behind, followed by the newer three-row Lexus TX (17) and the Lexus GX (8). Complaints came from all over the state, with Los Angeles (9), San Jose (7), San Diego (6), Riverside (5) and Irvine (4) at the top.
What stands out is how concentrated the Lexus numbers are. One category, airbags, accounts for roughly double the next one. That pattern does not tell you your own car has an airbag defect. It tells you what other California owners felt strongly enough about to report, and it is a good reason to check your VIN for open recalls before anything else.
If you own an RX, ES or NX and your problem is in one of these top areas, you are not alone. If your problem is something else entirely, such as a climate control fault or a water leak, that does not hurt your claim. The lemon law looks at whether your defect was fixed, not whether it is common.
- Airbags: 51 complaints
- Brakes: 25 complaints
- Electrical system: 19 complaints
- Engine: 15 complaints
- Lights, cameras and visibility: 15 complaints
What California Acura Owners Report to NHTSA
Acura owners filed 221 California complaints for the same model years and filing window, close to the Lexus total. But the Acura spread looks very different. The engine leads with 27 complaints, then steering with 23, then lights, cameras and visibility and collision warning and driver-assist systems with 21 each, and brakes with 20.
In other words, no single Acura problem area dominates. Five categories sit within a few complaints of each other. That matters for owners because there is no one headline issue to compare your car against. Your own repair orders will carry more weight than any brand-level trend.
Two SUVs drive most of the Acura total. The Acura RDX (72) and Acura MDX (66) together make up more than 6 in 10 complaints. The Acura Integra (27), Acura TLX (21) and Acura ILX (12) follow. San Jose led the city list with 13 complaints, ahead of San Diego (8), Sacramento (7), Los Angeles (7) and Roseville (4).
The mix of Acura categories also means problems can overlap. A camera fault can set off a driver-assist warning, and a steering complaint can involve the lane-keeping system. When you describe the problem to the dealer, say what you felt and saw, not what you think the cause is. The technician's job is to find the cause.
Why Airbag and Steering Complaints Carry Extra Weight
The top areas for these two brands, airbags for Lexus and engine and steering for Acura, include parts that can cause a crash or injury if they fail. California law treats those defects differently. Under the Tanner Act presumption in Civil Code 1793.22(b), if a defect likely to cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times within 18 months or 18,000 miles, the law presumes the manufacturer had a reasonable number of attempts.
For non-safety problems, the presumption needs 4 or more repairs of the same defect, or more than 30 total days out of service. So an airbag warning light that returns after two dealer visits can put you in a stronger position sooner than a rattle that returns after two visits. If your owner's manual clearly requires you to notify the manufacturer directly, do that in writing.
The presumption is only one way to prove a case. Claims can still succeed after 18 months or 18,000 miles if the defect first showed up while the car was under warranty. Many valid claims never fit the presumption neatly.
If the manufacturer cannot fix a defect that substantially impairs use, value or safety after a reasonable number of attempts, Civil Code 1793.2(d)(2) requires it to replace the vehicle or buy it back. You, not the manufacturer, choose the buyback if you prefer a refund. A buyback refunds the price paid plus collateral charges like sales tax and registration, plus incidental costs, minus a mileage offset.
Luxury Badge, Parent Company Claim
Many Lexus and Acura owners are surprised by who is named in a lemon law claim. Lexus claims usually name Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. Acura claims usually name American Honda Motor Co., Inc. The luxury brand is the badge on the car, but the warranty obligations run through the parent company's United States sales arm.
Repairs for both brands go through franchised dealers: Lexus dealers for a Lexus, Acura dealers for an Acura. The dealer is where your repair history is created, so every visit should end with a printed or emailed repair order that lists your complaint in your words, the date in and the date out, and the mileage.
Under Civil Code 1793.2(b), warranty repairs must be completed within 30 days unless you agree otherwise. If your car sits at the dealer waiting for parts, those days count toward the more-than-30-days presumption, so ask that the repair order show the date you dropped the car off. If you win, Civil Code 1794(d) makes the manufacturer pay your attorney fees and costs.
A loaner car from the dealer does not erase those days. Your car is still out of service for repairs. Keep the loaner agreement, because it is another record that shows when the car was in the shop.
Example: An Acura RDX With a Steering Problem
This is a made-up example to show how a claim can develop. Priya leased a new 2024 Acura RDX in Roseville. About four months in, the steering felt like it pulled toward the shoulder on the freeway, and the lane-keeping system seemed to fight her inputs.
She took it to her Acura dealer, which updated software and road tested the car. Two months later the same pulling came back, and the dealer replaced a steering component. When it happened a third time, she wrote down the date, the speed and the road, and asked the service advisor to quote her description exactly on the repair order.
Because steering is the kind of system that can cause serious injury, Priya's second and third visits mattered. She called a lemon law attorney, who reviewed whether her owner's manual required direct notice to American Honda, checked her repair orders for gaps, and sent the claim.
Priya kept making her lease payments the whole time. Since her RDX was leased, a buyback would mean refunding what she had paid and paying off the lease. Her case, like every case, turned on her own records, not on brand statistics.
Documents to Gather Before a Free Case Review
Whether you drive a Lexus or an Acura, the claim is built from paper. Collect everything now, even if you are not sure you have a case yet. A missing repair order is much harder to get later than it is today.
Do not stop making loan or lease payments while you gather documents or while a claim is open. Missed payments can hurt your credit and lead to repossession, and they do not speed anything up. Warranty claims generally must be filed within four years under Commercial Code 2725, and the timing rules are technical, so do not wait to get a review.
- Purchase or lease contract and any add-on product paperwork
- Every repair order from the Lexus or Acura dealer, including visits where no problem was found
- Your owner's manual and warranty booklet (look for any direct-notice requirement)
- Rental car, towing and rideshare receipts from repair days
- Photos or short videos of warning lights or the problem happening
- Any recall notices you received and the recall repair orders
Questions to Ask at Your Lexus or Acura Service Desk
Luxury dealers often go out of their way to make a service visit pleasant, with loaners, coffee and a quick wash. None of that changes what goes on the repair order. Before you hand over the keys, and again when you pick the car up, a few direct questions can protect your claim.
Ask them politely and write down the answers. If a service advisor tells you something important out loud, such as that a part is on back order or that other owners have the same problem, ask for it in writing or send a short email afterward to confirm what you were told.
If the answers worry you, or the same problem has now been in two or more times, call for a free case review. Lemon law attorneys in California are paid by the manufacturer when you win, so asking costs you $0.
- Will my complaint be written on the repair order in my own words?
- What exactly did the technician test or replace?
- Is there a recall or technical service bulletin for this problem?
- How many days has the car been here on this visit?
- Can I have a copy of the repair order today?

Key Facts (as of October 2026)
- Complaint counts are California owner reports to NHTSA for 2019 to 2027 model years, filed 2021 to 2026. They are not verified defects and are not adjusted for sales.
- The two brands' top problem areas differ: Lexus owners report the airbags most, Acura owners the engine.
- For either brand, a reasonable number of repair attempts is presumed within 18 months or 18,000 miles after 2 tries for a serious safety defect, 4 tries for the same defect, or more than 30 days in the shop (Civil Code 1793.22(b)).
