NHTSA Complaints · Active Recalls · California Lemon Law Data
The NHTSA tracks consumer complaints, manufacturer recalls, and safety investigations for every vehicle sold in the United States. These publicly available records are a critical resource for California lemon law cases because they establish patterns of recurring defects.
As of June 2026, the NHTSA has logged 50 complaints against the 2022 Ram ProMaster. Each complaint is filed by a vehicle owner or lessee through the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline or online portal at SaferCar.gov. Advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) defects — including malfunctioning forward collision warnings, lane keep assist failures, and erratic automatic emergency braking — can create dangerous driving conditions. The 2022 Ram Promaster has 6 NHTSA complaints for this defect type. Owner reports include: “The fcw/acc stopped working all possible fixes exhausted left turn signal intermittent failure. The fcw/acc started as intermittent but now doesn’t function at all seems to be common issue from research. There were warning lights indicating an issue. Van was at a dodge dealer for fuel and other electrical issues” (NHTSA Complaint #11646936)
Advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) defects — including malfunctioning forward collision warnings, lane keep assist failures, and erratic automatic emergency braking — can create dangerous driving conditions. The 2022 Ram Promaster has 5 NHTSA complaints for this defect type. Owner reports include: “While cruising at highway speed with adaptive cruise control enabled, the vehicle will incorrectly detect traffic/speed signs and will rapidly decelerate on a highway in traffic. I believe that the message that displays after detecting the new speed limit (improperly based on a sign other than a highway speed limit sign) without giving the option to reject using the “resume” button before. There is an option to disable traffic/speed sign detection, but that must be manually disabled in software every time the vehicle is re-started. Adjustment of the speed during adaptive cruise control based on traffic/speed signs should be disabled for safety. It’s fine to have the speed limit displayed on the dash, but dangerous to have the vehicle adjust speed on its own without sufficient warning, or at all. I would like to request that RAM be directed to disable the software connection between traffic/speed sign detection and the adaptive cruise control so that, just like regular cruise control, the operator chooses the vehicle’s speed. Note that this issue has happened many times since I’ve owned the vehicle, which was purchased as new, but I am now complaining to NHTSA because I experienced multiple incidents on my most recent trip that might have risked a rear-end collision from a vehicle following me when deceleration occurred.” (NHTSA Complaint #11616616)
Brake defects affecting safety may qualify for California’s two-repair threshold under Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.22, which applies to defects likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. The 2022 Ram Promaster has generated 5 NHTSA complaints related to braking, including ABS failures, grinding, reduced stopping power, and warning lights. Owner reports include: “Brakes failed (for the 4th or 5th time) while driving on the highway after approximately two hours. While traveling approximately 55mph on the highway (I do not drive engaging the brakes unless stopping) the Notice Service Braking System alert indicated on the dash. When I went to push in the brakes, they went to the floor, grinding and “pulsing” in and out as I attempted to stop. Please note that this issue has happened 3-4 times in the past and the dealership assures me this is normal. I was able to successfully get the vehicle to a dealership. THEY SAID THE STORED CODES MEANT NOTHING because they were stored and not active (see attached)That dealership stated they could not find anything wrong and therefore nothing to fix. I then drove the vehicle another two hours and the same thing happened. I got the vehicle to another dealership where it is now until they remedy the situation. In addition, when starting the vehicle from a cold state, the brakes often go to the floor and grind. Again, the dealership assures me this is ‘normal’ and to simply pump the brakes to remove excess air. This is a new vehicle with less than 8k miles, purchased new and has been occurring since purchased.” (NHTSA Complaint #11614986)
Engine and cooling problems are among the most serious defects under California’s Song-Beverly Act. Owner reports include: “On March 19, 2025 upon driving my car home from a 1 hour commute I sensed a unique, uncommon smell – like some sort of electrical component burning. I…”

California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code §§ 1790–1795.8) is one of the strongest lemon laws in the United States. It protects buyers and lessees of new and certified pre-owned vehicles that develop substantial defects the manufacturer cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts.
Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.22, a lemon law presumption is triggered when any of the following apply to your 2022 Ram Promaster:
Once the presumption is triggered, the burden shifts to Ram to prove the vehicle is not a lemon. Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d), Ram must pay your attorney’s fees if you prevail — meaning qualified representation costs you nothing out of pocket.
If your 2022 Ram Promaster qualifies as a lemon under California law, Ram may be legally required to:
Step 1: Document every repair visit. Keep all repair orders, work orders, and dealer invoices. Each visit counts as a repair attempt, even if the dealer says nothing is wrong.
Step 2: Keep returning for repairs. You must give Ram a reasonable opportunity to fix the defect. Visit different authorized Ram dealers if needed and ask for written documentation of each visit.
Step 3: Contact a California lemon law attorney. Once you believe the threshold has been met — 4 attempts for non-safety defects, 2 for safety defects, or 30 days out of service — contact an attorney for a free case evaluation. Under § 1794(d), Ram pays your fees if you win.
Step 4: Send a demand letter. Your attorney will send Ram a formal demand letter. Most California lemon law cases resolve through negotiation without going to trial.
Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.22, four or more repair attempts for the same non-safety defect, or two attempts for a safety-related defect, triggers the lemon law presumption. Additionally, 30 or more cumulative days out of service qualifies regardless of the number of repair attempts.
Yes. Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d), Ram is required to pay your reasonable attorney’s fees and court costs if you prevail in a lemon law claim. This means qualified lemon law representation is free to you if your case succeeds.
Yes. A recall is not required to file a lemon law claim. The Song-Beverly Act covers any substantial defect that impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle that the manufacturer cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts. NHTSA complaints support the claim by establishing a pattern, but are not a prerequisite.
California lemon law claims are generally subject to a four-year statute of limitations from the date you discovered or should have discovered the defect. However, you must still be within the manufacturer’s original warranty period when the defect first appears. Contact an attorney promptly to preserve your rights.
If your 2022 RAM Promaster has a recurring defect, California’s Lemon Law may entitle you to a full refund, replacement vehicle, or cash settlement — at no cost to you.
