Moderate Claim VolumeSong-Beverly Strength: Very Strong

The 2021 Ram Promaster has generated 14 NHTSA complaints for this defect category. If your vehicle has experienced recurring issues in this area that the dealer has been unable to repair after multiple attempts, you may have a qualifying lemon law claim under California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. Owner reports include: “Recall Remedy Failure NHTSA Recall Numbers: 25V-720 (67C) & 25V-552 (59C) I am reporting a failure by FCA US LLC to provide a timely remedy for Recall 25V-720. As of Jan 2026, the remedy remains “under development” since Oct 2025. Specific Safety Concerns for RV Owners: My vehicle is a 2022 Thor Tellaro motorhome. The admitted “Risk of Vehicle Fire” is critical because the vehicle contains propane and lithium/AGM battery systems. Despite the Part 573 report on the NHTSA server listing a “Do Not Drive. Park Outside” advisory, the manufacturer has failed to check these boxes on the consumer-facing summary and has broken links (“File Not Found”) for the 67C technical documents on their owner portal. This lack of transparency and the 90+ day delay for a fire-risk remedy has rendered my vehicle unusable. I request that NHTSA investigate why these safety advisories are being obscured from consumers and force the manufacturer to provide a buy-back or immediate repair.” (NHTSA Complaint #11714191)

Lane Departure System

Moderate Claim VolumeSong-Beverly Strength: Strong

Advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) defects — including malfunctioning forward collision warnings, lane keep assist failures, and erratic automatic emergency braking — can create dangerous driving conditions. The 2021 Ram Promaster has 9 NHTSA complaints for this defect type. Owner reports include: “The blind spot monitoring function frequently disables while driving this vehicle. This occurs more often during warmer weather and in my case only seems to happen when the brakes are applied. For a few minutes after each “blind spot disabled” warning, you cannot reset the blind spot alert function through the touchscreen system. This is a safety issue because you often don’t notice that the blind spot alert is disabled and expect to see or hear the blind spot warning when driving if an approaching vehicle is in your blind spot. This issue seems to primarily affect 2021 Ram Promaster vans. There are many posts in the ram promaster online forum about it @ [XXX] . My dealer connected my promaster to their computer just after the disable warning and there was no indication that it had happened–even though you could visually see that the blind spot monitor was off in the vehicle touchscreen monitor. They kept the vehicle for an afternoon and could not determine what was causing this malfunction. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)” (NHTSA Complaint #11595272)

Powertrain

Moderate Claim VolumeSong-Beverly Strength: Moderate

Powertrain and transmission defects directly impair the vehicle’s core function and are generally considered substantial defects under California lemon law. Owners of the 2021 Ram Promaster have reported harsh shifting, shuddering, slipping, and transmission warning lights. 7 NHTSA complaints have been submitted for this defect category. Owner reports include: “I purchased the vehicle above used on 4/22/2024 with roughly 70,000 miles on it. At 121,000 miles I lost the reverse gear in the transmission and the vehicle displayed 2 code P0736 and P0792. I call my local Chrysler dealership and inform him of the situation, and the service manage advise me of a recall 44A / NHTSA 23V-301 and asks for the VIN. He tells me that the recall has been completed on the vehicle and the cost to fix (replace the transmission) the vehicle will cost me about $4,000.00. I read the recall notice, and it states the vehicle effected had roughly 133,000 miles. The recall must have been closed by the previous owner but that does not change the fact that the manufactures initial repair did not cure the problem being that my vehicle had the catastrophic failure close to when the manufacture stated the problem in the recall. There are many owners of the same vehicle out there that will attest to the transmission failure on these vehicles. I would hope your department will take a serious look into this matter and hold the manufacture accountable and reimburse the cost of the repairs to the owners.” (NHTSA Complaint #11719287)

Brakes

Moderate Claim VolumeSong-Beverly Strength: Moderate

Brake defects affecting safety may qualify for California’s two-repair threshold under Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.22, which applies to defects likely to cause death or serious bodily injury. The 2021 Ram Promaster has generated 7 NHTSA complaints related to braking, including ABS failures, grinding, reduced stopping power, and warning lights. Owner reports include: “My van began making a loud squeaky sound, louder at low speeds and less at higher speeds. It sounded like it was coming from the wheels or undercarriage. There were no dash warning lights, alarms, or any other indicator of a serious issue. I drove the van around town for a few days approximately 30 miles. The van is heavy and I live in a hilly area, so I use the parking brake fairly often. I applied the parking brake within that week on an incline, and when I released the parking brake and drove forward, the squeak was louder then ever, so much so, people stared. There were no error or warning message on the dash or elsewhere. The parking brake indicator had come on normally while engaged and went off when it was released. I drove it directly to the local Ram dealer, as it seemed worse, hoping it was just in need of minor lubrication. It had just been serviced at the same dealer a few months earlier and I was told “it was like new with its low 12,500 miles”. I explained the new noise and that I didn’t want to cause damage by driving it, although there were no warning lights on. My van is still under the original warranty for a few more months. Even though they were booked, an employee went out and felt by the rear driver’s side wheel and said it was really hot and likely a frozen brake caliper. They were able to fit me in and discovered the parking brake was frozen, which was causing the noise. They ordered the parts to repair, disengaged the parking brake, and said it was safe to drive as the main brakes were a separate system. They said not to apply the parking brake again as it would hang up as before. -The dealer ordered the parts over a month ago, but said the brake parts are not only on back order, but with no estimated shipping date, meaning they aren’t even manufacturing them. -I am driving without a parking brake in a heavy vehicle in a hilly area with no pending solution and heading into winter weather. This is a safety issue! Please help ASAP.” (NHTSA Complaint #11625522)

California Lemon Law — Song-Beverly Act

California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code §§ 1790–1795.8) is one of the strongest lemon laws in the United States. It protects buyers and lessees of new and certified pre-owned vehicles that develop substantial defects the manufacturer cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts.

Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.22, a lemon law presumption is triggered when any of the following apply to your 2021 Ram Promaster:

  • 4+ repair attempts for the same non-safety defect without resolution
  • 2+ repair attempts for a defect likely to cause death or serious bodily injury
  • 30+ calendar days out of service for warranty repairs (cumulative, not consecutive)

Once the presumption is triggered, the burden shifts to Ram to prove the vehicle is not a lemon. Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d), Ram must pay your attorney’s fees if you prevail — meaning qualified representation costs you nothing out of pocket.

What You Can Recover

If your 2021 Ram Promaster qualifies as a lemon under California law, Ram may be legally required to:

  • Repurchase your vehicle — Full refund of your down payment, all monthly payments, registration fees, and incidental costs (towing, rentals), minus a mileage offset for miles driven before the first repair attempt
  • Replace your vehicle — Provide a new, comparable vehicle at no cost to you
  • Pay your attorney’s fees — Under § 1794(d), Ram pays all legal fees if you prevail
  • Civil penalty up to 2x damages — If Ram willfully violated the Act, courts may award double the actual damages

Steps to Protect Your 2021 Ram Promaster Claim

Step 1: Document every repair visit. Keep all repair orders, work orders, and dealer invoices. Each visit counts as a repair attempt, even if the dealer says nothing is wrong.

Step 2: Keep returning for repairs. You must give Ram a reasonable opportunity to fix the defect. Visit different authorized Ram dealers if needed and ask for written documentation of each visit.

Step 3: Contact a California lemon law attorney. Once you believe the threshold has been met — 4 attempts for non-safety defects, 2 for safety defects, or 30 days out of service — contact an attorney for a free case evaluation. Under § 1794(d), Ram pays your fees if you win.

Step 4: Send a demand letter. Your attorney will send Ram a formal demand letter. Most California lemon law cases resolve through negotiation without going to trial.

2021 Ram Promaster Lemon Law Questions

How many repair attempts qualify my 2021 Ram Promaster as a lemon?

Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.22, four or more repair attempts for the same non-safety defect, or two attempts for a safety-related defect, triggers the lemon law presumption. Additionally, 30 or more cumulative days out of service qualifies regardless of the number of repair attempts.

Does Ram pay my attorney fees?

Yes. Under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d), Ram is required to pay your reasonable attorney’s fees and court costs if you prevail in a lemon law claim. This means qualified lemon law representation is free to you if your case succeeds.

Can I file a lemon law claim without an active recall?

Yes. A recall is not required to file a lemon law claim. The Song-Beverly Act covers any substantial defect that impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle that the manufacturer cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts. NHTSA complaints support the claim by establishing a pattern, but are not a prerequisite.

What is the time limit to file a lemon law claim for my 2021 Ram Promaster?

California lemon law claims are generally subject to a four-year statute of limitations from the date you discovered or should have discovered the defect. However, you must still be within the manufacturer’s original warranty period when the defect first appears. Contact an attorney promptly to preserve your rights.
