FIAT is a small brand in the United States. Today its lineup centers on the 500e, a compact battery-electric hatchback, and many Californians also still drive the 500X crossover from recent model years. Because so few FIATs are on the road compared with larger brands, owners with a recurring problem sometimes feel they are on their own. You are not. California's lemon law protects a FIAT owner exactly the same way it protects the owner of a full-size pickup.
FIAT vehicles sold in the US are warranted by FCA US LLC, part of Stellantis. Under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, if FCA US cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of repair attempts, it must replace your FIAT or buy it back, minus a mileage offset. That includes leased vehicles, such as a leased 500e. A California lemon law attorney can tell you whether your repair history qualifies.
FIAT Warranty Coverage and Lemon Law
FIAT's official warranty page states that the FIAT brand limited vehicle warranty covers repair or replacement of factory-installed systems and parts for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. That is a longer basic term than many mass-market brands offer, and it gives you more time for a defect to show up while the car is covered.
The 500e also has electric drive parts, including the high-voltage battery, that carry their own limited warranty separate from the basic coverage. We could not confirm the exact current battery term from an official FIAT page, so check the Warranty Information booklet for your model year, which FIAT directs owners to through Mopar Vehicle Resources. The booklet also lists powertrain, corrosion and emissions coverage, plus any roadside assistance.
Three warranty points matter for a lemon claim:
- Timing. The defect should first be reported while it is under warranty. Once you report it, the claim can continue even if the warranty later runs out.
- Coverage type. A battery or charging defect on a 500e may fall under the separate electric component warranty, which can run longer than four years.
- How you bought it. After Rodriguez v. FCA US LLC (2024), ordinary used vehicles sold with only the remainder of the original warranty generally do not qualify. Certified pre-owned, demo and dealer-owned FIATs can still qualify. See does California lemon law cover used cars.

Common FIAT Problems in Recalls and Complaints
The FIAT data set is small, and we want to be clear about that. According to NHTSA recall and complaint data, FIAT has 2 recalls for vehicles since the 2021 model year, and NHTSA has received 12 owner complaints about those model years. Low numbers mostly reflect how few FIATs are sold in the US. They do not mean your car cannot be a lemon. A lemon claim depends on your own car's repair history, not on how many other owners have complained.
The two recalls
The first is a seat belt recall covering the 500e and the 500X; you can read about the front seat belt recall on our recall page, which lists it under a sister Stellantis brand because the campaign covers several brands. The second is a 500e headlight recall, an exterior lighting issue. So the 500e appears in both recalls and the 500X in one. Neither recall carried a do-not-drive or park-outside warning, and neither was remedied by an over-the-air software update.
The 12 complaints
The complaints are spread across many systems, with no single area dominating. Electrical system, forward collision avoidance, and unclassified or other issues have 2 complaints each. Vehicle speed control, air bags, seat belts, structure, and fuel or propulsion have 1 each. The 500e accounts for 8 complaints and the 500X for 4.
In plain English, electrical complaints on a small car like the 500e can involve the 12-volt battery, screens, or warning lights. Forward collision avoidance complaints usually describe the car braking or warning when nothing is in the way. On an EV, fuel or propulsion complaints usually mean the electric drive system, such as a loss of power or a car that will not go into drive. These are general descriptions of each category, not a summary of any one owner's report.
If your FIAT has a problem that is not in this short list, that is normal. Many warranty defects never become recalls or NHTSA complaints. They show up only in dealer repair orders, which is why those papers matter so much.
How a FIAT Lemon Law Claim Works
FIAT warranty service is done at authorized FIAT dealers. In California, many of these are part of Stellantis stores that also sell Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, so the nearest FIAT-authorized service department may not have FIAT in its name. Confirm before you go that the dealer is authorized for FIAT warranty work and, for a 500e, that it services electric vehicles.
Getting the right paperwork
Ask for a repair order every visit, even when no repair is made. It should show your complaint in your words, the mileage, the dates in and out, and what was checked or replaced. If the dealer cannot reproduce the problem, ask that "customer concern noted" or similar wording be written down. In our experience, the mileage offset is measured from the first visit where you reported the problem, even if the dealer could not verify it then, once the defect is later confirmed.
Read the section in your FIAT booklet and send a short letter to the address it lists. It costs little and closes off an argument later.
Documenting an EV problem
- Take photos of the instrument display when a warning appears, before you turn the car off.
- Save charging session records from home chargers and public networks, especially failed sessions.
- Write down range readings on a full charge if you believe range has dropped unexpectedly.
- Keep records of software updates the dealer installs. In our experience, a software update can count as a repair attempt.
When to call
Sooner is better. Days your FIAT sits at the dealer waiting for parts count toward the 30-day out-of-service rule, and parts for a low-volume model can take time. You can estimate a refund with our lemon law calculator and check your VIN for open recalls. In our experience, recall-related cases often resolve in about 1 to 3 months from the first call. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
Popular FIAT Models We Handle
FIAT 500e
The 500e is a small, battery-electric hatchback built for city driving. It appears in both FIAT recalls since the 2021 model year and accounts for 8 of the 12 NHTSA complaints. Problems with the battery, charging, or electric drive can fall under the separate electric component warranty.
FIAT 500X
The 500X is a compact crossover with a gas engine and available all-wheel drive. It appears in 1 recall since the 2021 model year and has 4 NHTSA complaints. Many 500X owners are now near the end of the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, so report problems promptly.
Leased FIATs
If you lease your 500e, you are still protected. California lemon law covers leased vehicles, and a buyback on a lease generally ends the lease and refunds payments you made. See does California lemon law cover leased vehicles.
Certified pre-owned FIATs
A certified pre-owned FIAT can still qualify under Song-Beverly. Keep the certification documents and any added warranty paperwork with your sale contract.

California Lemon Law for FIAT Owners
The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects FIAT owners and lessees in California. If FIAT or its authorized repair facilities cannot fix a warranty defect after a reasonable number of attempts, the manufacturer must repurchase or replace the vehicle (Civil Code 1793.2(d)).
A vehicle is presumed to be a lemon if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery, the same problem was repaired 4 or more times, a defect that could cause death or serious injury was repaired 2 or more times, or the vehicle was out of service for repairs for more than 30 days in total (Civil Code 1793.22). Many vehicles outside that window still qualify while they are under warranty. New, leased, certified pre-owned, demo and dealer vehicles can qualify; ordinary used cars without a new-car warranty generally no longer do after Rodriguez v. FCA US (2024).
What you can recover
- Buyback: your down payment, payments, taxes and fees, minus a mileage offset, with the loan or lease paid off.
- Replacement with a comparable new vehicle.
- Cash and keep: a cash settlement while you keep the vehicle.
- Civil penalty of up to two times your damages if the manufacturer willfully failed to comply (Civil Code 1794(c)).
What it costs

FIAT Lemon Law FAQ
Does California lemon law cover my FIAT 500e?
Yes, if you bought or leased it new, or certified pre-owned, in California and it has a warranty defect that the dealer has not fixed after a reasonable number of attempts.
How long is the FIAT warranty?
FIAT's official site lists a basic limited warranty of four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The 500e's electric components have separate coverage, so check your warranty booklet for that term.
FIAT has very few recalls. Can my car still be a lemon?
Yes. Lemon law does not require a recall or a large number of complaints. It depends on whether your own car has a warranty defect that has not been fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts.
Who pays my attorney fees in a FIAT lemon law case?
You pay nothing, win or lose. We are paid only if you win, and the manufacturer pays our fees, including in settlements. If a case is lost, our firm covers the costs.
Can I get a buyback for a FIAT with a recall?
Possibly. In our experience, a recall repair visit can count as a repair attempt, especially if you complained before the recall, and a recall with no available fix can support a buyback on its own.
My 500e lease is almost over. Is it too late?
Not necessarily. If you reported the defect while the car was under warranty, you may still have a claim, but call an attorney before you turn the car in so the records are preserved.

Fiat Lemon Law — Your Rights
If your Fiat vehicle has a persistent defect that Fiat’s authorized dealers cannot repair after a reasonable number of attempts, California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may entitle you to a full refund or replacement. This applies to new and certified pre-owned vehicles still within the manufacturer’s original warranty period.
Under the lemon law presumption, you typically need four or more repair attempts for the same problem, two attempts for a safety defect, or 30 cumulative days in the shop. Fiat pays your attorney fees if your claim succeeds — you pay nothing out of pocket.
The manufacturer — not you — is required to pay your attorney fees under Cal. Civ. Code § 1794(d) if your lemon law claim is successful. You pay nothing upfront and nothing out of pocket.
